MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 17

Seattle Mariners vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLBN

Yesterday we rode this very same series to an NRFI win. The pitching matchup may have changed, but the reasoning hasn’t.

The Mariners are one of the very worst offenses in the league. They rank 27th in runs scored, 30th in batting average and 30th in offensive strikeouts. A team that’s hitting just .215 and striking out over 10 times a game doesn’t seem like much of a threat to put up early runs. Bailey Falter hasn’t been outstanding lately, but he’s passable in this spot. He has held opponents to one or less runs in three of their last five games.

On the other side of the equation is Luis Castillo. He’s riding a solid streak of seven straight quality starts – he hasn’t failed to meet that criteria since June. The Pirates also aren’t smacking the ball at the moment either. They rank just 23rd in runs scored and 27th in offensive strikeouts. With numbers like these, Castillo shouldn’t have any issue getting us those three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-120)

Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, California
Broadcast – MLBN

The Braves offense has been ugly as of late. They have just 20 runs scored in the last five games (4.0 per game). Although that might sound terrible, it looks really bad when you consider 13 of them came in one game against the Giants. That leaves just seven runs scored in the other four games combined. They scored just two runs on Friday against Jose Soriano and a slew of relievers en route to a 3-2 loss. As a result, the fact that Griffen Canning has been smacked around in two of his last three starts doesn’t scare me off of this NRFI.

On the other side, it should be no sweat at all. The Angels are 26th in the majors in runs per game and even worse in the first inning, where they rank 27th in the league in runs scored. Now they face the consensus Cy Young favorite, Chris Sale. He’s coming off of 7.0 shutout innings against the Giants, where he struck out 12. The Angels should be an even easier task for him here and the first inning shouldn’t be an obstacle.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-135)
