MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 16
Seattle Mariners vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – Apple TV+
Is there a better spot to be in an NRFI than this? One of the hottest pitchers in the game – the sure-fire NL Rookie of the Year – up against one of the worst offenses in the majors. Paul Skenes has a 2.25 ERA and seems to strike out anyone in front of him. The Mariners are the worst team in the league in terms of strikeouts. Add in that they just got off a three-game set with the Tigers where they scored a total of four runs and the top half shouldn’t be a sweat at all.
Closing it our might be a bit harder, but not by much. The Pirates are the 29th ranked team in the league at scoring in the first inning. Only the woeful White Sox trail them in the category. Facing Logan Gilbert isn’t going to help matters. He too has a sub-3.00 ERA and has allowed one or less runs in four of his last five games. This one should be no different, so I don’t worry all that much about what’s to come in the first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 16: No (-175)
Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
Well, we mentioned it just a second ago. The White Sox are the worst team in the league at scoring in the first inning. They average just 0.30 runs per game in the opening frame. They too have a tough task in front of them in the shape of Spencer Arrighetti. He has only allowed three runs over his last two starts (13.0 innings). Perhaps more impressive than that is the sheer number of strikeouts he’s put up in that period. He’s sat down 25 batters in those 13.0 innings in the last two starts. He should even need to be that hot to stop the White Sox, but it doesn’t hurt either.
On the other side, we have a pitcher who is a bit cooler than I would like. Garrett Crochet has been getting hit around quite a bit since the All-Star break. However, the Astros might be a team that could help him get right. While they are on an impressive win streak, they aren’t scoring a ton of runs. They put up just 11 in their past series with the Rays (3.67 per game). They’ve fallen all the way to 13th in the league in run scoring, so we’ll give Crochet a chance to get right here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 16: No (-130)
