Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – August 9
Freddie Freeman – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases
Freeman missed a week of games to spend time with his son who was hospitalized. Since returning to the team, his bat has been hot. He has a hit in all three games since taking a step away and has beaten this projection in two of the last three games. To feel even better about this, he’s facing Mitch Keller, who he has been good against in the past. He is a career 6-for-12 here and should be able to keep the momentum going.
Grant Holmes – Higher than 1.5 1st Inning Strikeouts
Underdog is also offering a 0.5 first inning strikeouts projection for the 28-year old rookie, but I like the extra spicy 1.5 here. In his two career starts, he has four first inning strikeouts. In his very first start, he recorded the first seven outs by strikeout. Clearly his reliever stuff is playing up out of the rotation. Colorado also strikes out more than every team other than Seattle, so Holmes should have plenty of chances to get two early.
Will Smith – Lower than 1.5 Total Bases
If it isn’t broke don’t fix it. I’ve been riding the lower than on Will Smith’s hitting for a week now and I’m not stopping now. He last met this projection on June 30th, when he had two singles. The last time he met the projection before that was all the way back on June 14th. So he’s gone higher on this projection just one of the last 13 games he’s played. With him not having an extra-base hit since before the All-Star game, I’m fine with riding this one out again.
