MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 6

San Francisco Giants vs. Washington NAtionals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Giants leas off the top of the first and they were a team that made a statement with the trade deadline. Unfortunately for fans, that statement was that they were taking a step back. While the bulk of that had to do with pitching, they did trade way their leadoff hitter, Jorge Soler. While he was not setting the world on fire, their offense has taken a step back without him in it. They average 4.38 runs per game, but have averaged just 4.0 without him.

They’ll now face MacKenzie Gore, who granted has not been stellar as of late. However, he has been solid early in the game lately. In both of his last two games, he pitched solid early on. He didn’t allow a run in either of the first two innings in those games. Over those four innings, he allowed less than a hit a game. With the Giants struggle a bit more lately, he should be able to get us three innings.

On the other side, Hayden Birdsong has not been struggling. He’s worked his ERA under 3.00 on the heels of five straight starts of allowing two runs or fewer. Washington ranks 28th in the league in runs scored in the first inning, so making sure he doesn’t allow one of those runs early shouldn’t be an issue.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 6: No (-115)

Boston Red Sox vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox may have a well above average offense, but I’m putting my trust in Seth Lugo. Lugo a league-leading 2.57 ERA into action on Tuesday. He’s held his opponents to a run or less in two of his last three starts. However, what i like even more is that he does it without many strikeouts. With the Red Sox already ranking 28th in the league in striking out, he’s sure to get them to swing and miss more than most of his past opponents. The weak contact that he induces should take care of the rest of the first inning.

Kansas City also has an above average offense and this time I’ll throw my trust behind Brayan Bello. While his season stats don’t look nearly as good, he has allowed three of less runs in three straight starts. Two of those starts came against teams with better run scoring than the Royals. Additionally, he didn’t allow a first inning run in any of the three. When you add in that he’s been quite a bit better on the road this year, you have to like the chances of his wrapping up this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 6: No (-125)
