MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 5
Cincinnati Reds vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, Florida
Broadcast – ESPN+
The Reds have been a middle of the pack offense all year, but are just a touch worse in the first inning. They rank 22nd in the majors in first inning runs on the season and haven’t scored in the first inning in the last three games. That trend should help out Roddery Munoz, who takes the hill on Monday. He has been up and down this season, but as allowed two or less runs in three of his last five starts. That includes last game where he threw five innings and allowed just two runs with seven strikeouts. If that version of him shows up, he should easily get out of the first here.
In the bottom half of the inning, we have much less of a sweat. The Marlins are 29th in the majors in run scoring and now they have to face Nick Martinez. He’s likely to be used as an opener here, but in his last six appearances (12.1 innings), he’s allowed just one run. He’s also faced the Marlins twice this year, throwing 4.0 innings and not allowing a run. With as bad as Miami has been at scoring runs and with all his success against them, he should round out the NRFI for us here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (-120)
New York Mets vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 5:15 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Mets, despite their recent surge in the standings, are still one of the worst teams in the league at scoring in the first inning. They currently rank 29th with 0.36 runs per game in the first, only ahead of the White Sox. They’ll face Andre Pallante, which won’t make scoring early much easier for them. He’s been on a roll lately, allowing just nine earned runs in his last five games. He’s lowered his ERA from 5.23 to 4.04 in that span. That gives me enough confidence that he can keep the Mets quiet early.
Looking to finish off the NRFI on Monday is Sean Manaea. The Mets lefty is coming off his best performance of the year against the Twins. He went 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. That was against a top five offense in Minnesota, and he’ll see a significantly worse set of bats in St. Louis. The Cardinals rank 22nd in runs scored this year and they’re coming off a four-game set with the Cubs where they scored just 14 runs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (-125)
