MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 2

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, there’s the tall task of limiting the Diamondbacks’ offense, which has been one of the best in the league. However, I’m trusting the arm of the young righty Luis Ortiz. Since transitioning out of the bullpen and into this Pirates rotation, he’s been sensational. In five starts he’s racked up 30.2 innings and only allowed six earned runs – a 1.76 ERA. On top of that, the most recent of those starts was against these same Diamondbacks. While it was his worst of his starts, as might be expected, he did keep them scoreless through the first two innings and allowed only one in the first four innings. He should be able to start another NRFI for us here.

The bottom of the first has a much less fierce offense looking to spoil our fun. The Pirates rank 27th in the majors in first inning runs and are 22nd in runs overall. Bradon Pfaadt should be good enough to keep them in check on Friday. He’s held his opponents to one or less runs in four of his last five games and carried a 2.31 ERA through the month of July.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 2: No (-130)

San Francisco Giants vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Giants have been a middle of the pack offense this year. They’ve been quite a bit worse early in the game – ranking 26th in first inning runs. They numbers have both been worse since the trade deadline, albeit in a small sample. In two games since they’ve traded leadoff hitter Jorge Soler, the Giants have scored just three total runs. None of those runs came in any of the first four innings.

Andrew Abbott should be able to keep that trend going. He has a 3.38 ERA on the year and has been generally pretty strong early in games. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in the first two innings of a game since June 21st. If you want to reduce it down to just the first inning, he hasn’t allowed a run since June 6th – nearly two months ago.

Cincinnati has had similar woes offensively this year. They, too, are a middle of the pack hitting team with less potency early in the game. Kyle Harrison shouldn’t help matters. He’s allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts (17.0 innings). He also managed to rack up 20 strikeouts in that time.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 2: No (+100)
