MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 1
Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLBN
In the top of the first, the Braves will rely on Charlie Morton to get this NRFI started right. He’s had an up and down year, which could be expected for a pitcher in his 40s. However, the right-hander has done well against sub-par offenses. In his last three starts against teams in the bottom half of runs scored (18.1 innings), he allowed just one earned run. That comes out to an ERA of 0.49 against bad hitting teams. The Marlins are precisely that – they rank 29th in the majors with just 3.63 runs per game.
In the bottom half of the first, the Marlins send out Max Meyer to try to close the deal for us. Early in the season, Meyer was considered to be a top candidate for Rookie of the Year. However, just 20 months removed from Tommy John surgery, the Marlins instead opted to keep him safe and demote him to the minors. That doesn’t change just how good he’s been this year in the limited sample. He carries a 3.00 ERA into Thursday’s action, which includes a start against a much healthier Braves team. In that game he went 6.0 innings, allowing just one run and striking out seven.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 1: No (-120)
Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
Speaking of bad offenses, this game will feature a pair of teams in the bottom half of the majors in runs scored. The Rockies, despite having the benefit of playing half their games at elevation, they rank just 17th in run scoring. They’ve been even worse lately – scoring just 13 runs in their last five games.
They’ll look to change that against Carson Fulmer. While he may have a limited sample, just two games against the Athletics, Fulmer has looked decent. They scored some runs off of him, but he did give the Angels two scoreless first innings in those starts. Decent should be all we need to get that NRFI started right with this Rockies offense.
The Angels offense has been even worse than the Rockies on the year – albeit a bit better lately. They’re 26th in the majors in runs scored, which is about what they’ve been putting up lately. They’ll have to face a hot pitcher in Ryan Feltner. Don’t let his 4.99 ERA fool you – he’s been lights out lately. He’s had six straight starts of three runs or fewer. He also held a 2.51 ERA through the month of July.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 1: No (-125)
