MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 9

Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top half of the inning, Dean Kramer takes the bump looking to limit a Cubs’ offense that has been underwhelming. They are in the bottom third of the league in terms of run scoring. Additionally, they’re 23rd in the league in strikeouts – which are nearly nine per game.

Kramer, on the other hand, has been anything but underwhelming lately. He’s coming off of an outing where he held the Mariners scoreless for five innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight. He’s held his opponents to three or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts. In that span, he’s brought his ERA down from 4.95 to just 3.93. With as good as he’s been lately, the Cub’s offense shouldn’t get to him.

The real sweat in this one will likely be in the bottom of the inning. Some might be scared off this play knowing that the Orioles are the best team in the league at scoring runs, or because Shota Imanaga hasn’t been the lights out version we saw at the beginning of the year. However, we have two things working for us here. Firstly, the Orioles don’t do much of their run scoring early. Despite being the best scoring team, they rank 12th in first inning runs. Secondly, Imanaga hasn’t been his Cy Young self lately, but he does have back-to-back quality starts with no runs in the first inning. The most recent of which was against the Phillies, who are the best at scoring runs in the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (+105)

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Guaranteed Rate Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

Minnesota is another good hitting team that might scare some people off of an NRFI play – especially against the awful White Sox. However, Erick Fedde has been a revelation for them this year. He’s allowed two or less runs in four of his last five outings. The most recent start was against another good set of bats in Cleveland. He allowed just one earned run over six innings – allowing just three hits in the process. He should be able to get us at least three outs on Tuesday.

The bottom of the first should be no sweat at all. The Whie Sox have been terrible this year. They average just 3.24 runs per game and are even worse at home. Speaking of things they’re the worst at, they’re also the worst team at scoring first inning runs at home. Bailey Ober shouldn’t help matters for them. He has four straight quality starts with at least eight strikeouts in each of them. He’ll likely mow through this order with no issues.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (-135)
