Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – July 2

Jorge Soler – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Soler rolls back into his former home in Atlanta, where he won a World Series MVP award. That’s already motivation enough to have a big game. However, there’s more reasons to like what Soler is capable of Tuesday.

Firstly, he’s been hot as of recent. He’s coming off of back-to-back multi-hit games and has beaten this projection in three of his last four games. He had a big month of June in general, hitting .284 and slugging .484 across the month. Not only that, but he has history against Braves starter Reynaldo Lopez. Over 21 plate appearances, Soler boasts a 12-for-19 (.632) line with three homers and three doubles. That comes out to a 1.263 slugging percentage over their run ins.

Jose Altuve – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

I’m not sure there is a bat hotter in the last week than Jose Altuve’s. The Astros second baseman has been ripping off multi-hit games as if they are nothing. Over the last week (six games) he has five multi-hit games and is hitting .476 in that span. He hasn’t been all that hot with extra-base hits, but has had a double and a pair of homers in that span. Whether he manages to add to that total or just grab a couple more hits, either works for this projection.

Reynaldo Lopez – Higher than 5.5 Strikeouts

We’ll head back to Atlanta to round out the Underdog entry, this time with a pitcher. The aforementioned Reynaldo Lopez may not have a great history against Jorge Soler, but he has been on a great run as of late – particularly with strikeouts. He only managed five strikeouts in his last start against the Cardinals, but exceeded this projection in each of the last four starts prior. In those four starts he averaged 7.25 Ks per game. The Giants are striking out 8.11 times per game, which is right around the league average. Lopez should be able to come out above this projection without too much strain.
