MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 25
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top half of the inning, flamethrower Hunter Greene takes the hill in an effort to get our NRFI started right. He’s been sharp as of late, allowing just two earned runs in his last two starts (11.1 innings). The most recent of those starts was against these very same Pirates, where he went 6.1 scoreless innings. Of course this isn’t particularly surprising given the Pirates’ offensive woes this season. They currently rank 24th in the majors in run scoring. Even worse, they are all the way down at 25th in MLB when it comes to scoring in the first inning.
The offensive in Cincinnati hasn’t been all that much better. They rank 18th in run scoring right now and are even a little worse at home. They’re also much worse at scoring in the first inning – 22nd in the majors. Things likely won’t be all that much better against Mitch Keller on Tuesday. He brings his 3.11 ERA into action and has been lights out recently. He’s held his opponents to one or fewer runs in four of his last five games. His June ERA is just 1.80 and he held a 1.30 ERA through May. He should be able to take that NRFI home for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 25: No (-125)
Minnesota Twins vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, Arizona
Broadcast – MLB TV
You might be surprised to see these two offenses get mentioned in an NRFI article. However, I like the way the arms going in this game have been limiting runs.
To kick things off on Tuesday, last year’s playoff darling Brandon Pfaadt will try to limit this Twins offense. While he’s had some rough starts in there, he really settled in his last couple starts. He’s allowed just four earned runs over those two games (12.1 innings). He also managed to cook up eight strikeouts in the start against the Angels, which is a good sign that he’s starting to get things right.
On the other side, Joe Ryan looks to close out the NRFI. He hasn’t allowed a first inning run in his last three games and has only allowed five runs total in that span (20.0 innings). The only real way he seems to be allowing runs lately is by home runs. Just one of those five runs scored on something other than a home run. While that might be alarming to some, the Diamondbacks haven’t been a big home run team. They rank 19th in the majors at under a dinger per game. That should give Ryan the stability to get us through the first at the very least.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 25: No (-130)
