MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 24

Seattle Mariners vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners offense has been on a bit of a skid as of late. They’ve lost four of their last five games and haven’t scored more than four runs in any of those losses. It’ll be hard for them to get back on track against Taj Bradley, who has really settled in as of late. He has allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts (18.0 innings). In than span, he’s struck out 21 batters. With the Mariners being the MLB team with the most strikeouts per game, Taj should be able to pitch himself out of any jams that he gets himself into.

If Taj Bradley is going to be an asset to our NRFI efforts, Bryan Woo will be an even greater one. He’s been downright lights out this season – sporting just a 1.67 ERA. He has had seven starts and has held his opponents scoreless in four of those. Meanwhile, he’s hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start this season. Tampa Bay is 20th in the league in first inning runs and 24th in run scoring in general. With all of those factors, I’d be surprised if they scored at all on Monday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 24: No (-130)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – NESN

The top half of the inning shouldn’t be much of a sweat at Fenway on Monday. Despite all the promise in this Blue Jays lineup, they are 27th in the majors in scoring runs. They’re even worse at scoring in the first inning, where they rank 29th in the majors – only ahead of the Nationals, and a spot behind the White Sox. The pitching matchup shouldn’t help much here either.

Tanner Houck takes the bump for the Red Sox with his 2.14 ERA. He’s currently listed as the third best odds to win the AL Cy Young at +900, and he’s had legitimate Cy Young stuff this year. The last time he allowed more than three earned runs in a game was April 12th. Additionally, he and opposing pitcher for Monday, Chris Bassitt, faced off last week and gave us an NRFI. I expect that they will again here.

The bottom half of the inning might be a bit more of a sweat. The Red Sox are a top 10 team in terms of run scoring, but they are in the bottom half of the league in terms of first inning runs. Plus, the aforementioned Chris Bassitt has been quite good. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts (19.0 innings). He looked solid against Boston last week and I like his chances to give us another scoreless first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 24: No (TBD)
