MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 22

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

Jared Jones takes the bump for the Pirates. Despite being torn apart in his last outing, he’s looked good as of late. In the two starts prior, he allowed just two earned runs over 11.0 innings. Those starts came against the Dodgers and the Twins. The Rays are quite a bit worse in terms of hitting than those squads. They rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of runs and are ranked 24th in runs in general. It feels like this is a great spot for Jones to get back on track.

In the bottom half, Zach Eflin looks to bring the NRFI home. He’ll do so against a Pirates team that is equally bad at scoring runs. Like their foes for the series, Tampa Bay is in the bottom third of first-inning run scoring and 23rd in terms of runs in general. Eflin hasn’t been as good as he was in his first season with the Rays. However, he has managed to hold opponents scoreless in 69.2% of the first innings he’s pitched this season. Combine that with Pittsburgh’s stagnant offense, and it should equal a blank first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 22: No (-125)

Washington Nationals vs. Colorado Rockies

First Pitch – 9:10 pm EST
Coors Field – Denver, Colorado
Broadcast – MLB TV

A sneaky plus-money NRFI for Saturday is in Coors Field. Of course, we have concerns about the thin air and somebody launching a home run, but these two offenses make me feel safe.

In the top half of the first, the Nationals will look to do damage against Cal Quantrill. In his last three starts (16.0 innings), Quantrill has allowed just three earned runs. That includes a start against the Yankees and one against the Twins – both of which are top ten teams in the league in terms of scoring runs. The Nationals are, notably, not that. They’re in the bottom third of runs scored in the league and are dead last in terms of first-inning runs (0.24 per game). They also haven’t scored in the first inning in nearly a week.

On the other side, the Rockies are a touch better offensively. However, even with the honor of playing half of their games at elevation, the Rockies are still in the bottom half of the league in terms of runs scored. Facing Mitchell Parker won’t help matters much on Saturday. He’s only allowed three earned over his last three starts (17.2 innings), and good outings have been the norm for him all season. It’s led him to a 3.06 ERA on the season.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 22: No (+100)
