MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 21

Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV

The White Sox with Erick Fedde on the mound is always a favorite of mine when it comes to NRFI hunting. He, along with Garrett Crochier, have been the bright spot for this miserable Chicago squad. His 3.09 ERA is more than respectable and he’s coming off of back-to-back quality starts. He also has five quality starts in his last eight games. Detroit is in the bottom third of the majors in terms of first inning runs and runs overall. It should be easy for Fedde to keep them in check.

I’d pretty much take a pitching machine to shut down the White Sox for an inning. They’re averaging 3.09 runs per game, which puts them in dead last with a 0.48 buffer to the next worst team. Unfortunately for them, they will have a much stiffer test than a pitching machine. Jack Flaherty is rocking a 3.01 ERA and is 8th in MLB in strikeouts (100 Ks). He’s also been three straight starts (16.2 innings) without allowing a run. The White Sox don’t strike me as the group to break that up.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 21: No (-130)

Boston Red Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – NESN

The top half of the first will likely be the bigger sweat in this one. The Red Sox are a top ten team when it comes to scoring runs. However, they are a touch worse early in the game, which makes this a bit easier. Regardless, Andrew Abbott has been throwing well enough to limit the Red Sox offense for at least three outs. He has allowed more than three earned runs just once since April and has seen a nice uptick in terms of strikeouts as of late.

On the other side, the Red Sox send Kutter Crawford to the bump. He’s trailed off a bit lately, but still has a respectible 3.54 ERA to show for it. Meanwhile, the Reds are 23rd in first inning runs and 19th in run scoring in general – both of which are on a downward trend. They’re coming off of a series with the Pirates where they only managed three total runs over a three-game stretch. They may just be the bats Crawford needs to get himself right on Friday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 21: No (-105)
