MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 17
Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – FS1
It’s a Paul Skenes day, which means I like the Pirates to keep the first inning scoreless. He has been as advertised since he came up and seems to be getting better. Not only did he go 6.1 innings scoreless last time out, but he has onlky allowed six earned runs in his last five starts. When you add in that the Reds are 24th in the majors in terms of first inning runs, the top half should not be a sweat at all.
Skenes is the name getting all the ink, but don’t sleep on Carson Spiers. Not only is he rocking just a 2.33 ERA, but he’s allowed just one earned run in his last three appearances. Pittsburgh isn’t really much of a threat either. They rank 23rd in the league in runs scored, and are even a bit worse in the first inning. They rank 25th when it comes to first inning runs. Spiers should be able to keep his run going on Monday.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 17: No (-130)
San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top half of the inning, the Giants will try to spoil are NRFI action against Javier Assad. While he’s had a couple of bad starts in a row, he still carries a 2.81 ERA into Monday’s action. He;s also struck out at least seven batters in three of his last four games. The Giants aren’t exactly the team that’s going to take advantage of him, especially early in the game. They are one of the five worst teams when it comes to scoring in the first inning.
The Cubs are a touch better in terms of hitting, but are still in the bottom third when it comes to scoring runs. They’ve been particularly bad lately as well. In their last four games, they’ve scored just eight total runs. Flame-thrower Jordan Hicks should have no issues keeping that squad at bay. He’s got a 3.01 ERA and did a fine job of keeping the Astros at bat early in his last start.
