MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 5

Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

I don’t always love going to a game with an opener in action, but Nick Sandlin has been pretty damn good for the Guardians. This will be his first attempt at opening for them, but he’s been scoreless in five of his last six appearances. He has also held opponents scoreless in 14 of his last 16 appearances. Despite the hot bats of the Royals (which rank 6th in runs scored), I still think Sandlin gets us the top half of the first.

In the bottom half of the inning, I have quite a bit more faith. The first reason is that the Guardian’s offense has slowed a bit in the past few games. They are averaging just 4.33 runs per game over their last three, which pales in comparison to the 5.10 that they’re averaging on the season. Also, despite scoring a lot of first inning runs, they are 19th in YRFI percentage with just 25.0%, which means they stack them when they score.

Another reason I’m calling for a scoreless bottom of the first here is Brady Singer. The Royals’ righty has a 2.63 ERA and just a 1.12 WHIP. He’s held five of his last six opponents to just one run. With the relative coolness of Cleveland right now, I like him to continue that trend.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 5: No (-120)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

We targeted this matchup on Tuesday with Jared Jones on the mound for the Pirates. Not only did the NRFI cash, but the Dodgers failed to score for the entire game – 6.0 of those innings belonging to Jones. Now they’ll have to deal with flamethrower Paul Skenes. Skenes hasn’t just been a headline this season; he’s been phenomenal at limiting runs. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts (18.0 innings).

On the other side of things, Pittsburgh has not had a particularly strong offense. They’re ranked 22nd in runs scored and first inning runs on the year. They’ll get James Paxton on the opposing bump, who has been solid as long as he isn’t facing the Reds. He maintained a 3.08 ERA over the last month. However, if you eliminate the two starts against Cincinnati, he had a 0.57 ERA in May. With the team at the plate wearing black and yellow, he should keep it scoreless early on.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 5: No (-105)
