The further teams get into regional play in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, the more exposed bullpens can become. East Carolina’s pen ranks 8th nationally with a 3.88 ERA. However, it’s ECU’s fifth game in four days, and the Pirates have dealt with pitching injuries all season long. If you look under the hood, there aren’t many reliable options left for Head Coach Cliff Godwin to use.
It’s the same story for Evansville, too. Even though the Purple Aces have played one less game than ECU this weekend, Evansville doesn’t have as good depth as the Pirates. The Purple Aces’ bullpen has a 6.11 ERA, which ranks them 138th in the country.
During the Sunday press conference, when he was asked about the pitching situation for Monday, Head Coach Wes Carroll said that “Nick Smith, Max Hansmann (7.31 ERA, 32 IP), Jakob Meyer (6.21 ERA, 37.2 IP), and Jace Kressin (4.50 ERA, 18 IP) are all candidates who could appear in Monday’s game.”
Both teams’ offenses have been super solid this season. East Carolina has a .884 Team OPS and 112 wRC+, while Evansville possesses a .916 Team OPS and 119 wRC+. Additionally, Sunday night’s game got out of hand and had a 19-6 final score. The 13.5 total for Monday’s game is just too low.
