The 2026 MLB Draft has come and gone. Now, the 2027 MLB Draft class is on the clock. It’s time for SGPN to step up to the plate and deliver a “Way Too Early” 2027 MLB Mock Draft piece. Which team will draft high school superstar Dylan Seward? Where will well-known college contributors like Landon Hairston, Gavin Kelly, and Tague Davis be picked?

2027 MLB Mock Draft Way Too Early
The 2027 MLB Draft class’ biggest strength is the supreme depth of star pitchers from college baseball. Dax Whitney is the biggest star in the sky, however after undergoing elbow surgery in May of 2026, he will be sidelined for almost the entire ’27 season. Guys like Tomas Valincius, Dylan Volantis, Aidan King, Ryan McPherson, and Chris Levonas have a chance to make up some ground.
At the top of many big boards, you will see high school superstar Dylan Seward but not many other high school players, especially pitchers. For many reasons that is slowly becoming a trend in the MLB Draft.
College pitching is the strength of the ’27 draft class, but there are many hitters that will get drafted in the first round from a top-heavy crop of college bats. Over the last few days I tasked myself with finding hypothetical homes for Landon Hairston, Gavin Kelly, Brendan Lawson, Adrian Rodriguez, Tague Davis and more.
In recent years, the MLB has deployed a lottery to determine the top 6 picks in the draft. I used Tankathon’s MLB Draft Lottery Simulator to create the order. However, I chose a final iteration that did not stray too far away from what the standings look like today. Here is the fun iteration of the MLB Draft order that I will use for the exercise.
Due to relatively MLB’s rules to discourage tanking, the Giants and Pirates are not allowed to pick inside the Top 9 in the 2027 MLB Draft.

However, Los Angeles fired Perry Minasian, their GM, before the 2026 MLB Draft and now John Mozeliak has stepped in as the lead supervisor. St. Louis selected 6 college pitchers in their last 11 first-round picks under Mozeliak’s leadership. LAA picked a high school pitcher and three college hitters with their first four picks in the ‘26 Draft. Dylan Seward looks like the 2027 MLB Draft class’ frontrunner to sign for the most money. He is a 6-foot, 180-pound switch-hitting shortstop that can burn on the basepaths. Seward starred during Phase 1 of USA Baseball tryouts because he has lightning-fast bat speed, and his cut from the left-hand side is tailored to launch baseballs. The Northern California product botched a couple of plays at shortstop while in the summer circuit, but with his plus-plus speed, Seward has such a high defensive floor with the ability to move to centerfield in the pros if it does not work out in the 6-hole. |

| The Rockies have selected nine college players with their last 10 1st Round picks. Gavin Kelly emerged as a superstar during his sophomore year with West Virginia. He led the Mountaineers to a College World Series semi-final appearance, batting .382, with a 1.202 OPS, 19 home runs, and 21 doubles. Kelly continued his fantastic 2026 calendar year by tearing it up at the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team trials and in the World Collegiate Baseball Championship. The Pittsburgh native led Team USA with a 1.237 OPS and hit .474 (2nd on team). Kelly has the ingredients to be a super-utilityman in the pros with the ability to play a middle infield spot, catcher, or even in the outfield occasionally. Add in 21 stolen bases across two college seasons, the 6-foot, 185-pounder has good game speed too. |

| Since 2023, Scouting Director Brian Bridges has led the charge for Kansas City. The Royals have used their 18 Top 100 selections to pick 10 college players (six NCAA arms). Dax Whitney spurned potential first-round money in the 2024 MLB Draft to fulfill a childhood dream and pitch for Oregon State. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander was the Beavers’ ace during their 2025 CWS run. However, in May the ‘26 season, Whitney tore his UCL and underwent elbow surgery. There is no guarantee that Whitney will pitch in a meaningful game prior to the ‘27 Draft, but what else does he need to do? In his college career, Whitney tossed 139.2 innings and posted a 2.77 ERA, 224 K, 55 BB, and just a .185 BAA. Whitney has a uniquely compact delivery, but has good extension from an over-the-top arm angle that creates a high-90s fastball (can touch 100) with good ride. He supports the great heater with two plus breaking balls. When the FB is good, the curveball is unhittable coming from the same tunnel, just about 20mph slower. The slider can touch 91mph and has hard, tight spin. Whitney also possesses a good changeup. |

| The Athletics have had 11 Round 1 picks in the last 10 years. They’ve selected seven college hitters. Landon Hairston is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound athletic outfielder. Hairston has an all-around game that would probably grade 50 or above across the board. He has a top-notch approach at the plate, is a pure hitter with excellent bat-to-ball skills, and has almost doubled his free passes vs strikeouts in his college career. Hairston answered the biggest question about his prospect profile in 2026 when he hit 28 home runs compared to his tally of 4 in 2025. Lastly, Hairston has rich MLB bloodlines: son of 11-year MLB veteran Scott Hairston, while great-grandfather Sam, grandfather Jerry, uncles Johnny and Jerry Jr all had MLB careers as well. |

| Cincinnati has selected four college players (three RHP) with their last five picks in the first round. Tomas Valincius is a 6-foot-2, 225-pound southpaw flamethrower. His arm action is quick and deceptive from a three-quarter slot. Valincius’ fastball lives in the mid-to-high 90s with significant arm-side sink. The calling card for the Mississippi State Bulldog is his wipeout slider that crosses 3,000rpm sometimes. He tunnels the sinker/slider combo well and supplements those pitches with a changeup too. In 2026, Valincius emerged as one of the best pitchers in the country. Valincius punched out 134 hitters, walking just 20, in 97.2 innings, with a 3.50 ERA. |

| Eight of Toronto’s last 12 Round 1 picks have been college players (six pitchers). Brendan Lawson is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound power threat in the left-handed batter’s box. Lawson hails from Toronto and has lasered 29 homers through two college seasons at Florida. Lawson stamped a .315 batting average, 1.210 OPS, and a 77:46 free pass to strikeout ratio across 264 plate appearances in 2026. Defensively, there is still a question mark. Lawson runs well for his size, but projects more as a corner infielder than a shortstop (where he’s playing for the Gators right now). |

| David Stearns and the Mets have had 11 picks inside the first four rounds of the last three drafts. New York has selected a college player with 10 of those picks, a couple of them were two-way stars. Ryan McPherson features a mid-to-high 90s fastball and a split-change that has wicked arm-side dive in his 4-pitch mix that also includes a slider and curveball. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was a reliever as a freshman at Mississippi State and then battled some injuries during his sophomore season. He has tallied 107 strikeouts in 82.1 IP across two seasons. McPherson has been at his best while wearing the red, white, and blue for the USCNT the past two summers. |

| In 10 straight MLB Drafts, Baltimore has selected tooled-out hitters with their early picks. At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, Jimmy Janicki is an extremely athletic catcher who has a strong arm and frames well with not much projection remaining. He has an unorthodox swing that creates explosions up to 118mph exit velocity on contact. Janicki looks like one of the Asian baseball superstars with his hands set high and a wide stance. This season Janicki raked (.343 AVG, 1.080 OPS, 21 HR, 26 2B) and played a massive part in mid-major stalwart program, Troy, advancing and winning a game in the College World Series. Janicki also imprinted tremendous contact rates with great speed on the basepaths. Janicki deserves credit for honoring his commitment to the Trojans baseball program. However the biggest question for him paying off a first-round price tag will be how he translates against stronger competition moving into his pro career. |

| The Tigers have had 10 Top 100 picks in the President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, era. Detroit has drafted six prep players with the 10 selections (four left-handed hitters). Graham Houston is a switch-hitting shortstop with a balanced approach at the plate. From both sides of the plate, it’s a level swing that frequently cuts the ball in half to create line drives that spray the gaps for the extra bases. It is no surprise that Graham, the younger brother of Marek Houston (Twins’ first round pick in ‘25), is an excellent defender. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Graham is not as tall and lanky as Marek, but he still has the athleticism, quick hands, and lateral mobility that make him one of the best all-around position players in the ‘27 high school class. |

| San Francisco has selected college players with eight of their last 10 first-round picks, five of which have been position players. “Tough” is probably the best word to describe Adrian Rodriguez. Texas Coach Jim Schlossnagle said, “He is the most courageous player I’ve ever coached.” That’s because, in 2025, Adrian Rodriguez fractured his hand, and played through it. In the offseason he had a procedure. That surgery didn’t necessarily cure all the pain, he was playing through irritation and pain at the beginning of the ‘26 season. Then Rodriguez found out that he had an allergic reaction to a staple in his hand. He had another quick, temporary procedure done during the middle of the ‘26 season and missed a couple of weeks. Schlossnagle said that A-Rod’s hand has sapped his potential power. However, he’s still hitting .321, with a .929 OPS, and 29 stolen bases, across 461 college plate appearances. Rodriguez flashed superstardom during the ‘26 postseason and hit for the Cycle during the College World Series. With Troy Tulowitzki on staff with the Longhorns, look for the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder to continue to improve his defensive actions, keep hitting for average, and add a little bit of power to his game in ‘27 too. |

| Paul Tobini is the Nationals’ new President of Baseball Operations. He came from the Red Sox Organization in his final three drafts the Red Sox grabbed 10 college players with their 12 picks inside the first four rounds. In 2026, at Washington, he followed suit with their only two Top 50 picks selecting two college bats. Aidan King is a strike-throwing bulldog on the mound. It’s hard to explain, but his stuff plays incredibly well despite some metrics that aren’t very sexy. King is 15-4 in 28 starts, with a 2.92 ERA through the first two seasons of his college career with 171 strikeouts and 42 free passes. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder has a quick, deceptive arm angle that allows his 3-pitch mix to play up. King’s fastball can cross 95 but generally sits under that increment. His go-to pitch is the 2800rpm slider that he sets up after the heater. He will show a changeup to LHH as well. |

| General Manager Chris Young has had a hand in selecting seven players 21-years old or older with the Rangers’ last nine 1st Round picks, six of the seven were hitters. Chase Fralick is a durable, physical 6-foot-2, 225-pound brick wall behind the plate. He moves well and is great at blocking/receiving. With that said, the bat is the carrying tool(s). Fralick is a career .324 hitter and smoked 20 homers in ‘26. His strong hands allow him to handle the barrel superbly, rarely whiffing, and he can muscle the baseball over infielders for hits even when he’s beat on a pitch. |

| Seattle has selected a high school player with nine of their last 17 first-round picks. Eight of the prepsters picked were position players. Venezuelan born, Lubin Rincon relocated to Texas, where he has established himself as one of the top high school prospects in the 2027 MLB Draft. He is still filling out his 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame but has a quick swing from the left side catered for contact. With some further physical development, there is room for Rincon to add more power and arm strength. |

| Minnesota has selected a hitter with 13 of their 15 first-round picks. Nine of those selections were out of college. The Twins are an organization that drafts position players based off batted ball data. Linkin Garcia has freakishly loud, raw tools. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Garcia has a long swing with plenty of bat speed, is aggressive at the plate, but has a good contact rate. There is a lot of potential for in-game power as he physically develops more throughout his career. The same goes for his arm strength, which pairs with good speed and good hands. Troy Tulowitzki at Texas is without a doubt the best infield coach for a long and lanky raw infielder. 2027 is a huge year for Garcia’s potential after hitting .338/.387/.489, with 21 doubles as a freshman at Texas Tech. |

| This will be the second draft where John Mozeliak is not in the room for the St. Louis Cardinals during the MLB Draft. Zach Mortimer, formerly a national crosschecker for the Cards, was promoted to Director of Amateur Acquisitions before the 2026 MLB Draft. Mortimer steered the ship along with Randy Flores and Chaim Bloom having a large say in the final decision as well. With that being said, all three of these guys were in the room in 2025, plus Mortimer and Flores have been affiliated with St. Louis for a while. In ‘26 the Cardinals had seven picks inside the first four rounds, they drafted seven college players. STL has selected 16 college players with their last 19 picks inside the first four rounds. Dylan Volantis has the best curveball in the 2027 MLB Draft class. Volantis’ left-handed release point from his 6-foot-6, 220-pound stature allows him to pound the top rail with a low-to-mid 90s fastball and use that same plane to drop the patented California Curveball off the table. In 2025, Volantis was named National Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and he became the Longhorns’ ace in 2026. Volantis has punched out 209 hitters, with a 2.03 ERA over 146 innings in his two college seasons. |

| Pittsburgh has selected a high school player with six of their last seven Top 50 draft picks. Entering the 2026 summer circuit, Grant Westphal had a prospect profile that I personally loved and was in my 1–1 considerations. Westphal has five tool potential. He is an athletic 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, runs like the wind, and has a beautifully violent left-handed swing that produces power to all fields. However, Westphal literally did not record a hit in July during Phase 1 of USA Baseball tryouts with a plethora of opportunities. Some of that can be attributed to his home state of Kansas not providing elite pitching for him to face like he did in Cary, NC. Nevertheless, it was one really bad, yet important week, but there is still a lot to dream about. |

| In his first three drafts Miami’s President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix has led the Marlins in selecting eight college players with their 12 Top 100 picks. Trent Grindlinger was a highly touted recruit who balked at a six-digit signing bonus out of high school to attend Tennessee. As a freshman he split time behind home plate with the Volunteers making 165 plate appearances. Grindlinger made the most of his limited opportunities, batting .345, with a .986 OPS, and 8 dingers. With more opportunities in ‘26, expect the USA Collegiate National Team participant to continue his ascension up the prospect ranks. He is a physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound catcher who is not the nimblest of movers on the basepaths or behind the plate, so the bat will have to carry the profile. |

| San Diego has drafted 14 prepsters with their last 16 first-round picks. Eight of the high schoolers have been pitchers. Connor Salerno is a stocky 6-foot-4, 230-pounder with a quick, compact stride and three-quarter arm slot from the left side. The heater lives in the mid-90s and has the ability to jump on hitters with a flat approach angle. Salerno will flash three offspeed offerings (SL, CB, CH) and can throw them all for strikes. |

| Cleveland has drafted 9 hitters with their last 16 first-round picks. Their front office has a notable affinity for middle infielders. Also, the Guardians have noticeably liked left-handed hitters and elite Cape Cod League performers. Matt Ineich is one of the best pure hitters in the entire 2027 MLB Draft class. He has a stubborn plate approach because he rarely whiffs, he rarely chases, and he will sting any baseball in the strike zone with elite bat-to-ball skills. Among players with 25+ games played on the Cape, Ineich has the 2nd best on-base percentage (.450), 11th best batting average (.298), 12th best OPS (.819), and 12 stolen bases (12th). Furthermore, Ineich had an elite ratio of free passes (66) to strikeouts (35) in ‘26 with CWS participant West Virginia. With his great speed and nice combination of footwork and fielding, Ineich should stay in the 6-hole while playing in the pros. |

| Arizona has selected high school hitters with nine of their last 15 Round 1 picks. Sebastian Castillo is a speedster that has hit against every stage of competition that has been put in front of him. Castillo is an athletic 185 pounds and 6-feet tall and packs a punch at the plate. He has a smooth RHH swing with pull-side power. Castillo was one of the best players on the field at all times during Phase 1 of USA Baseball tryouts. He ripped 6 hits in his 13 at-bats and also swiped four bags. Castillo still pitches, therefore has a strong arm, but his future is most likely on the left side of the infield. |

| Philadelphia has picked a prep player with seven of their last eight first-round selections. Carter Hadnot is an uber-athletic, quick, twitchy shortstop. At 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, Hadnot can cause stopwatches to malfunction, and he uses his swift feet to create 99th percentile angles that make him one of the better high school defenders in the ‘27 class. Hadnot is a switch-hitter with a strict on-base approach at the plate. In four games during Phase 1 of USA Baseball tryouts, Hadnot didn’t notch a hit. However, he forced the issue against defenses by stealing five bases after drawing four walks and getting on base due to a couple of errors. |

| Boston has taken 12 college players with their last 15 picks inside the first four rounds. Chris Levonas was a second round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the Brewers, but elected to go the college route and it has largely paid off. This past season, Levonas posted a 10-3 record, 2.82 ERA, 116 K, 33 BB, in 73.1 IP. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder can burn some leather with his heater that touches 100mph at times. It’s a 5-pitch repertoire (CB, SL, CH, CUT) and his most impressive secondaries are the breaking balls. Levonas’ curveball cannonballs into the bottom of the zone with +3,000rpm, while the slider works laterally away from right-handed hitters with 2,800rpm. |

| Houston has selected a college hitter with 7 of their last 11 picks in the first round. If anybody in the 2027 MLB Draft class has 80-grade power, it is Tague Davis, who seemingly swings a sledgehammer based off the hard contact he consistently creates on contact. Davis is a physically imposing 6-foot-4, 225 pounds with broad shoulders in the batter’s box. He takes vicious cuts at the baseball, with tremendous bat speed while rocking a vintage no-batting-gloves look. Lastly, Davis has a strong arm thanks to his pitching background coming up through the amateur ranks. |

| 14 of the Yankees’ last 17 Top 100 picks have been college players. Eight of those 14 +21-year-olds have been pitchers. Wylan Moss has a superb 3-pitch mix (FB, CH, CL) that should allow him to anchor UCLA’s starting rotation in ‘27. Moss’ calling card is being able to kill spin on his filthy changeup, and he is not afraid to throw it to RHH. What separates Moss from the average 6-foot-3, 200-pounder with a mid-90s fastball is his elite extension and long, loose arm action. Moss is projectable and possesses three distinct pitch shapes that will make him an enticing first round pick next July. |

| The Cubs have selected 12 college players in their last 13 Top 100 selections. Eight of those +21-year-olds have been hitters and Chicago has a noticeable affinity for elite wood bat performance in the Cape Cod League or one of the various notable prospect events. There is serious helium in Derrick Pitts’ draft stock right now. Pitts is a chiseled 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and has five-tool potential at the next level. The Cincinnati centerfielder’s defensive prowess gives him a very high floor entering the ‘27 calendar year. Pitts has elite speed with a great arm, and he has made his fair share of highlight-reel home run-robbing catches. How Pitts performs with the stick over the next few months will determine just how much money he will be offered in the draft. With his strength, power should come with increased contact rates. Moving forward, if Pitts improves his swing selection, both of the final boxes in order to become a five-tool player could be checked. Pitts took massive steps forward while playing in Taiwan in the World Collegiate Baseball Championship for Team USA. He was the leadoff hitter in all four games, leading the team with a .500 AVG (8-for-16). |

| Over the last four years Atlanta has had 14 picks inside the Top 100. The Braves have used 10 of those to take college players (5 pitchers, 3 shortstops, 2 outfielders). Much like his 6-foot-5, 235-pound stature, Duke Stone is like a sturdy prizefighter. What you see is what you get with Stone, and he is on the attack nonstop. Stone’s college stats and pitch characteristics of his fastball/slider/changeup combination aren’t special, but the 6-foot-5, 235-pounder’s almost 8 feet of extension is what sets him apart from the rest. It is a really unorthodox at bat for hitters, evident from Stone’s elite whiff and chase rates. |

| The White Sox have selected a college hitter with 10 of their last 15 first-round picks. Similar to a Hot ‘N’ Ready Little Caesars Pizza, Hogan Denny doesn’t have much physical development and projection left, so he should be good to go out of the oven for any of the 30 MLB organizations that drafts him. At 6-foot, 220 pounds, Denny has a really good selective aggressive approach and has heavyweight power to pair with it. Defensively, Denny threatens with 99th percentile arm strength from behind the plate or a corner outfield position. Denny was All-Conference in the Big Ten after publishing a .357 AVG, 1.099 OPS, 14 HR, 18 2B, 38 HBP/BB, and 32 K stat line. During the summer, Denny continued to see red at the plate, he stunted a .500 OBP at USA Collegiate National Team trials. |

| Matt Arnold is the new General Manager of the Brewers. Milwaukee has had five 1st round picks, they’ve selected four left-handed hitters. Two from college and two out of high school (three HS hitters total). Malachi Butler has ‘it’. Butler benefits from being on a super talented high school team (McEachern HS) that plays against some of the best amateur competition in the country. He is the table setter who is a pest at the plate. Butler is a projectable 6-foot-3, 190 pounds. Power should come with development, but right now, Butler excels at getting on base, whether it’s through meticulous contact hitting or a picky plate approach that results in many free passes. Butler’s defense at shortstop is a strength of his as well. |

| In their last 17 first-round picks, Tampa Bay has selected 13 hitters (eight high school). Caden Dawson has one of the loudest offensive packages in the 2027 high school draft class. He popped 4 doubles (6 hits) in 11 ABs at Phase 1 of USA Baseball 18U tryouts. Dawson is 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, punishes fastballs, runs well, and has a good arm. |

| The Dodgers have used 11 of their last 17 Top 100 picks to select college players. Los Angeles has drafted six college hitters in that sample size. Sam Cozart is a 6-foot-8, 255-pound behemoth on the pitcher’s mound. Cozart pounds the zone with strikes from a 5-pitch mix (CUT, 4S, SL, CB, CH). He was named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year last season after tantalizing hitters with a 6-0 record, 9 saves, 1.72 ERA, .140 BAA, 77 K, 13 BB, in 52.1 IP. Cozart’s heater has good cut and carry. It is crazy to say, but he could add a few ticks of velocity to his max velocity of 96mph. Cozart was a dominant freshman closer in the SEC in ‘26.
