MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 3
San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – Apple TV+
I rode the Giants to an NRFI on Thursday and I like their spot again on Friday. They continue to be brutal in the first inning. They rank 28th in first inning runs with 0.28 per game. They’ve been four straight games without scoring in the first. Now facing Aaron Nola, who has been relatively sharp as of late, the task shouldn’t be any easier.
The Phillies are the opposite side of that spectrum – the complete opposite. They currently are first in the majors in first inning runs. So why, then, are we hopping on an NRFI in a game that includes them?
The simple answer is Jordan Hicks. The Giants righty has allowed two or fewer runs in every game he’s pitched this year. His 1.69 ERA is 6th in the majors amongst qualifying starters. Combine that with his high strikeout rate and I like his chances to keep Philadelphia at bay.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 3: No (-135)
Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
Ronel Blanco is another starter who has allowed two or fewer runs in every start. He’s been a revelation for the Astros, who could really use one. Facing Seattle should only help his numbers. The Mariners are last in the majors in strikeouts—striking out 10.42 times per game. They also are 21st in the majors in runs scored, at 3.58 per game. I feel like Blanco will grab some early whiffs en route to a scoreless first.
George Kirby hasn’t had a typical George Kirby season yet, but there are signs to like. After being roughed up early, he’s thrown back-to-back scoreless outings against the Diamondbacks and the Rockies. While the Rockies aren’t juggernauts, neither are the Astros. They rank in the bottom half of the league in terms of runs scored. Kirby should silence their bats for a good portion of this game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 3: No (-110)
