NFL Week 14: Five Underdog Fantasy Pick’ Em Plays – Defense
Brian Branch – Higher Than 5.5 Tackles + Assists
Branch has been a tackling machine for the Detroit Lions defense this season, with 58 tackles to his name thus far. The Lions head to Soldier Field Sunday to take on the Chicago Bears. When the teams played in Week 11, Branch recorded six tackles. In the two games since, Branch racked up 8 tackles against the Packers and 7 last week against the New Orleans Saints.
In six of his ten games in 2023, the rookie safety has gone over this 5.5 tackle mark. After Justin Fields ran all over this defense for 108 yards in Week 11, the Lions may use Branch to help spy the speedy quarterback.
Divine Deablo – Higher Than 6.5 Tackles + Assists
Divine Deablo has been a bright spot on this turbulent Raiders team. Diablo has exceeded 6.5 tackles + assists in four of the last six games and seven of the ten games he played in 2023.
Josh Dobbs, who was announced as the Vikings starter on Wednesday, is one of the leading rushing quarterbacks in the NFL heading into Week 14. His rushing prowess, combined with his average yards per completion at 6.1, should lead to plenty of tackle opportunities for Raiders linebacker Divine Deablo.
Stephon Gilmore – Higher Than 3.5 Tackles + Assists
A huge matchup will take place in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday night. The Philadelphia Eagles come to town after beating the Cowboys in Week 9 on a last-second stop. Gilmore was called for a pass interference call late in the game that he was not a fan of. Gilmore and his Cowboys teammates are going to be highly motivated as they square up against this tough division foe.
Gilmore has been a little hit-and-miss on tackles this year, recording only 1 last week against the Seahawks. However, in five games Gilmore has reached this number. The 2019 defensive player of the year has shown up when it matters for the Cowboys this season. In games against tough opponents like the 49ers, Rams, and this Eagles team, he recorded 4 combined tackles in Week 9. Big-time players step up in big games. Gilmore should do so this weekend.
Charvarius Ward – Higher Than 4.5 Tackles + Assists
The 49ers defensive back has been on a tackling spree over the second half of the 49ers’ 2023 season. Heading into Week 14, Ward has 56 tackles, including 5 each of the last two weeks against the Eagles and the first game against this weekend’s opponent, the Seattle Seahawks.
Against Tampa Bay, Ward racked up 9 tackles and has gone over 4.5 in five of their last seven games. Seattle’s offense was on fire Thursday night against a tough opponent in the Dallas Cowboys, and they’ll look to build on that momentum this weekend in San Francisco. Leading to a lot of work for Charvarius Ward.
Alonte Taylor – Higher Than 3.0 Solo Tackles
The Carolina Panthers head down to New Orleans to take on the Saints. When these two teams matched up in Week 2, Taylor accounted for 5 solo tackles. At the start of the season, Taylor transitioned from playing the outside corner spot to cover the slot wide receivers and hasn’t skipped a beat. 40 of Taylor’s 52 total tackles in 2023 have come as solo tackles. In 2023, Taylor has gone over this mark in eight games, including three of the last four.
