Underdog Fantasy Daily Pick’Em Entry – September 30

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – Higher than 0.5 Singles

My first thought process for any player playing in the last couple of days of the season is whether or not their team is in a meaningful game. Now is the time that clinched teams are resting their legs to get ready for their post-season, or in the case of eliminated teams, in order to get a good look at some fresh meat.

The Blue Jays are in the thick of things. A win on Saturday could clinch a playoff berth. I expect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to be a big part of what gets them there. He had three hits last night, although two of them were doubles. It may be risky to take the singles projection in that case, but he has lots of them against the Rays’ starter, Shawn Armstong. He’s 8-for-10 career against Armstrong, with seven of those hits being singles.

Luis Castillo – Higher than 7.5 Strikeouts

Luis Castillo has been quite consistent lately. In each of his last four starts, he’s struck out exactly eight batters. He’s done that through different innings totals and against a complete array of different levels of opponents – from the Athletics to the Rays. It seems logical that in a big game, we might see him dig deep for some of his best stuff.

Of the people in meaningful games on Saturday, there are none greater than this one. The Rangers have a chance to clinch a playoff spot, and the Mariners are looking to claw their way back into a wild card spot. Despite the Rangers being in a high-leverage spot, I like them to strike out a lot here. They’ve fanned 9.67 times a game over their last three games. Those were all against starters far less dangerous than Castillo.

Merrill Kelly – Higher than 1.5 Walks Allowed

Kelly has had some real issues with control as of late. He’s cleared 1.5 walks in each of his last four starts, and he’s averaging 3.5 per game in that stretch. That’s right on pace with the Astros, who already are walking 3.41 times per game. The Astros need this game pretty badly today, or they risk falling out of the playoffs altogether. I expect them to be patient and take advantage of Kelly’s recent issues.
