This Divisional Round matchup between the 85-win Cleveland Guardians and the 84-win Chicago White Sox is one of the arguments against the expanded playoffs we are currently experiencing. These are hardly elite teams, and the fact that the Sox only had to beat the 81-81 Houston Astros to reach this round makes it even worse.

But I shouldn’t hate – I had Chicago to win their Wild Card Round series at +125, and they didn’t even make me sweat. One team that did make the White Sox sweat this season, despite winning the season series against them, was the Guardians. Chicago was sitting atop the Central Division for most of the season before a late swoon by them, and a surge by Cleveland, swapped their positions in the standings.

Now the Guardians are rested and have their pitching rotation lined up the way they like it. And it’s a formidable rotation, led by rookie All-Star hurler Parker Messick, who will take the ball in Game 1. The White Sox may be forced to play a bullpen game to start the series, which isn’t ideal, especially since this round is only a best of five. The overall pitching should definitely be in Cleveland’s favor.

As is the playoff experience. Chicago famously made a miraculous run to the postseason this year after two disastrous, embarrassing seasons. Cleveland, meanwhile, has now made the playoffs three straight years and four of the last five, including an American League Championship Series appearance in 2024.

While the Guardians are hardly a good home team, barely above .500 at Progressive Field (41-40), the White Sox are a worse road team (36-45). With the home-field advantage, the rest, the experience, and the superior pitching, I’m going with Cleveland to prevail and move on to the ALCS.

And I’m taking a big swing on a prop play for the series. I’m betting that the Guardians Angel Martinez, who led the team with 18 dingers (18 homers led the team, you read that correctly) this regular season and hit three against the White Sox, will lead the series in homers. A +1800 payout looks good to me.

Best Bets: Cleveland to win series (-140); Angel Martinez to lead series in homers (+1800)
