Last week was the start of a great season. I provided some insight into the targets and opportunities coming out of Week 1 of the NFL season. The article, Week 1 Target Share Report, was designed to identify trade targets, waiver wire pick-ups, and fades. The results should have helped you in more ways than one. Here are some of the takes from last week:
- Buy Miles Sanders – Saw a 20% jump in rushing opportunities
- Buy Drake London – From Zero FPs in Week 1 to WR 21
- Buy Christian Kirk – From WR 96 in Week 1 to WR 13
- Buy Puka Nacua – Continued to garner massive targets
- Buy Zach Ertz – TE12 in Week 1 and TE7 in Week 2
- I also highlighted Rashid Shaheed and faded Kendrick Bourne
Not a terrible first week of suggestions, so what does Week 2 of the NFL season tell us?

Week 2 Target Share Report
Week 2 of the NFL season brought to light more information regarding targets, snaps, routes, and overall opportunities for our fantasy squads. So what does it all mean, and how can we move forward? Let’s find out.
Week 1 Absent Players in Week 2
We saw a fair amount of big-time risers based on the route participation and target percentage in Week 2. We saw Zack Moss take over, running 89% of possible routes, handling 86% of the rushing work, and playing 98% of possible snaps. The knowns of Jeudy, Andrews, and Kelce don’t need to be discussed, but I think DeVante Parker should be a target in your leagues. He immediately participated in 94% of passing downs and took a 16% target share.
Name | Team | W2 Tgt % | W2 Rte % |
DeVante Parker | New England | 16% | 94% |
Zack Moss | Indianapolis | 11% | 89% |
Jerry Jeudy | Denver | 11% | 80% |
Mark Andrews | Baltimore | 18% | 75% |
Hunter Renfrow | Las Vegas | 4% | 73% |
Jonnu Smith | Atlanta | 14% | 64% |
Travis Kelce | Kansas City | 19% | 54% |
Justice Hill | Baltimore | 7% | 52% |
Major Target Share Market Movers (Route Participation)
For major market movers, I want to see a route participation jump of over 30% from week to week or a target share change of over 10%. A couple to recognize in the route participation jump. With Brandin Cooks out, we saw Jalen Tolbert take the field and play on 81% of passing downs but only draw 9% of the target share.
Tank Dell would be the other player to pay attention to. We saw him as a rookie in Week 1 get a chance to run a route on 42% of passing downs. That number jumped to 79% this week, and he looked good doing it. I didn’t even mention the fact that he also saw a jump of over 10% target share from Week 1 to Week 2, so he needs to be added.
Now, let’s take a look at the players that saw a target share jump of over 10%.
Acquire – Major Target Share Market Movers (Target Share)
I told you last week and will tell you again: pay attention to Christian Kirk. We saw not only his target share rise, but we saw his route percentage jump equivalent to the drop in Zay Jones. He is a stud in a stud offense with a stud QB. Marquise Brown was a player I was high on in the offseason.
Admittedly, a little too high, knowing he would be playing with a back-up QB for at least the first half of the season. He saw a rise in target share and route participation and looked good doing so, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. In fact, he finished Week 2 with better separation, target air yard percentage, and yards over expectation than Justin Jefferson (not saying he’s better than JJ).
Some others of note: Drake London, who was written about last week as someone to pay attention to, was playing 76% of passing plays, 82% of snaps, and drew 19% of the target share in Week 2. His talent is superior, and I expect the overall target volume to improve over the next two weeks, so you better buy now if you didn’t listen last week. The Atlanta Falcons will be playing Detroit and Jacksonville over the next two weeks, which will require much more passing.
Pass – Major Target Share Market Movers (Target Share)
Another interesting find in this report is guys like Nelson Agholor and Chase Claypool. While both of them gave you good targets and a touchdown, there is more to the story.
Nelson Agholor only participated in 32% of passing plays, which means the opportunity is limited, and the chance of the production sticking is much lower. Chase Claypool, however, participated in 79% of snaps and 76% of the passing downs. The problem is that Darnell Mooney went out of the game with an injury, so don’t buy the sudden production.
An interesting addition to the running back group would be Zamir White. Zamir was seldom used and completely worthless last season. We saw a similar approach in Week 1. With Week 2, however, and another disappointing outing by Josh Jacobs, Zamir saw a 25% change in rushing opportunities. He is likely worth a monitor and a speculative add in redraft leagues.
Minor Target Share Market Movers
So, the minor movers will be the players who have seen a 5% – 10% increase in volume of opportunity. This doesn’t mean they have seen more targets just yet, but their opportunities have risen. We haven’t really touched on a tight end just yet, so I would feel remiss if I didn’t do it here.
A few guys to note here in Irv Smith and Sam LaPorta saw jumps in route participation. Out of the two, only LaPorta saw an increase in targets. I think both of these guys are targets for you in the landscape that is the tight end. While the ship may have sailed on obtaining Sam LaPorta (which I would still test the waters for), Irv Smith is 100% for sale or likely even on your waiver wire.
One more tight end of note to potentially add in waivers is Adam Trautman. He finds himself in more opportunity as Dulcich hit the IR this week. Trautman was brought in by Sean Peyton and has seen 72% and 82% of snaps over the last two weeks. With that opportunity, he has seen a 10% jump in route participation and should see more targets as a result. He is worth a speculative add if you punted the tight end position.
