MLB Picks for August 13th
Chicago Cubs @ Toronto Blue Jays
Start Time – 1:37 pm EST
Rodgers Centre
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Blue Jays come into Sunday’s action on the heels of a three-game losing streak – two of which were to the Cubs. However, they’re likely to get a bit of a boost here from some quality starting pitching. Hyun Jin Ryu heads out after a scoreless start last time out. Really, that’s all they should need to win a game being that their bullpen has allowed only one earned run in the last five games (14.2 innings).
The Cubs should get a quality start in their own right. Jameson Taillon has been four straight games with two or less earned runs. I’m still expecting a bounceback game from the Jays, which is why I like them at -130, but I also think the under is obviously in play to. The total is sitting at 9 with the under going off at (-102)
San Diego Padres @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Start Time – 4:10 pm EST
PNC Park
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Padres enter this game having lost five of their last six games. They seemingly invent ways to lose each and every time out lately. They send Seth Lugo to the mound who got touched up for eight earned runs last time out. Yet, for some reason, the Padres are listed as favorites on the road against the Diamondbacks. It’s also worth noting that they’re seven games under .500 on the road and five games under as the betting favorites.
The Diamondbacks have been solid when you can get them as underdogs (34-29). Their starter Brandon Pfaadt got hit around a bit by the Dodgers last time, but had a solid start against the surging Giants last time. I think he settles in and the Diamondbacks cash at +114.
Prop of the Day – Matt Olson o1.5 Total Bases (+100)
Matt Olson is red-hot right now and the Mets aren’t offering a ton of resistence. He’s gone for 12 total bases in the first three games of the series so far. If you want to stretch his run one more game, he had five total bases in the series finale against Pittsburgh. His slugging percentage is over 100 points higher against righties and it’s where 34 of his homers have come from. He’ll get righty Kodai Senga on Sunday, who was touched for 18 hits over his last two starts.
