This week, an all-star field takes on the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe. But it’s not a collection of the best professional golfers in the world. It’s a field full of big named celebrities and athletes hoping to take down the American Century Championship. Here are all the best bets and fantasy picks for the American Century Championship.
American Century Championship Picks – Format
The American Century Championship is a three-round modified Stableford format. The scoring is as follows:
- Double Eagle: 10 points
- Hole-In-One: 8 points
- Eagle: 6 points
- Birdie: 3 points
- Par: 1 point
- Double Bogey+: -2 points
Whoever accrues the highest Stableford score over the course of three rounds wins the American Century Championship and $125,000.
American Century Championship Picks – Fantasy Picks
You can fill out a roster of five celebrities or athletes and play Fantasy American Century Championship! Here is who you should pick:
Group 1 – Tony Romo
Tony Romo is playing great golf right now. Per his GHIN profile, Romo recently shot 64 and 67 back to back in competitions. He boasts a +3.2 handicap and hasn’t had a round worse than 76 this year. He’s by far the cream of the class in this celebrity tournament. Pick him as your top player in the fantasy contest.
Group 2 – Jerry Rice
Jerry Rice crushed it on the football field. And lately, he’s crushing it on the golf course. Jerry Rice boasts a 0.6 handicap and doesn’t have a score higher than 81 in his last 20 rounds. He recently shot a 73, which boasted a -1.5 differential to his handicap. He’s never done well in this event before, but unless he’s a handicap manipulator he’s ready to make noise at this event. His consistent game and low scores should help him accrue a ton of points in the American Century Championship.
Group 3 -Andrew Whitworth
It’s hard for 6’7 300 Lb. men to play the game of golf well. But Los Angeles Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth manages to do just that. Whitworth boasts a 3.3 handicap and plays golf out of Sherwood Country Club. That recently hosted the 2020 ZOZO Championship won by Patrick Cantlay. Whitworth has played a ton of golf lately and has some respectable scores. His high rounds are in the low 80’s with several rounds in the mid to low 70’s. He’s more than capable of scoring well in a modified Stableford event with his form.
Group 4 -Joe Buck
Arguably the most famous announcer in sports, Joe Buck is a passionate golfer with a decent grasp of the game. Joe Buck is a member of Bel-Air Country Club as well as the St. Louis Country Club in Missouri. He currently boasts a 3.4 handicap, which is his lowest handicap ever. Joe Buck also most recently shot a 76 on very difficult tees, and he’s broke 80 eight times in his last 12 recorded rounds. He finished T42 in last year’s American Century Championship but is in a great spot to play much better this year.
Group 5 -Emmitt Smith
Emmitt Smith is a member at TPC Craig Ranch, which recently hosted the AT&T Byron Nelson. He just recently started putting scores into the GHIN after a long period of dormancy. Since April 2021, Emmitt Smith has an average stroke differential of 9.2 with two rounds breaking 80. He’s by far the best golfer in Group 5 and is horribly mispriced in the game. Pick Emmitt Smith as the final man on your American Century Championship roster.
American Century Championship Picks – Best Bets
Here are the best bets to make to win the American Century Championship:
Tony Romo – +280
As mentioned earlier, Tony Romo is absolutely striping the ball. Since June 1st, Romo has an average stroke differential of -1.6, by far the best in the field. He won this event in 2018 and 2019 and was well on his way to winning last year before withdrawing due to a back injury. He’ll look for redemption and his third title in four years.
John Smoltz – +900
John Smoltz is showing no signs of slowing down as he approaches his mid-50’s. Smoltz regularly contends at the American Century Championship and won a similar event in the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in 2019. His form at the moment is great too. Since June 1st, Smoltz has an average stroke differential of 0.9. That’s better than Steph Curry and only a little lower than Mark Mulder. At +900, he’s a solid value to steal the American Century Championship.
Joe Pavelski – +1600
Dallas Stars center Joe Pavelski is on fire with his game and is underpriced at 16/1. Since June 2021, Pavelski has an average stroke differential of -1.1. That’s second in the field only to Tony Romo in that same stretch. He finished T3 at the American Century Championship in 2018 and is in a great spot to finally get the win in 2021.
Ray Allen – +4000
Ray Allen is coming in hot as he did for years behind the arc. The member of TPC River Highlands has shot 73, 73, and 74 in his last three recorded rounds heading into the tournament. That’s an average stroke differential of 0.5 over his last three rounds. Ray Allen finished T3 in this event in 2018 and is a decent sleeper to contend yet again.
