Arkansas vs Virginia
Start Time: 1:00 PM EST
This game will be played at a neutral site in Washington, D.C., as the Skyscanner Capital Showdown.
Arkansas enters this game 1-0 overall record and a 1-0 mark against the spread. The Razorbacks covered their season opener at home as a 42.5-point favorite against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Virginia comes into this matchup with a 2- 0 overall record and a 0-2 record ATS. The Cavaliers failed to cover at home against Drexel and Northeastern as a very heavy favorite in both games.
Arkansas played a similar game to this one early last year. The Razorbacks lost to Michigan State by three at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. This year? The Hogs catch a Virginia team that returns three starters from last year’s tournament team and host of returning players to the Cavaliers’ rotation.
Arkansas returns only one starter from last year. It’s swingman Billy Richmond. Alongside Richmond are four five-star recruits, a Furman transfer at center, and a Georgia transfer at shooting guard. Shouldn’t this be a spot for Virginia to clip a top-25 team early in the year? Not so fast, my friend.
First, Arkansas appears to have an advantage in its back court despite the overall youth. Virginia point guard Chance Mallory turned the ball over six times against Drexel in the Cavaliers’ season opener. He tightened it up in Virginia’s second game, but shooting guard Sam Lewis turned the ball over six times against Northeastern. The athletes that Arkansas will have in the backcourt are light years ahead of anyone that Virginia faced against Northeastern or Drexel.
Second, Arkansas freshman combo guard Jordan Smith Jr. is from Washington, D.C. This will be a return home for the Razorbacks’ top recruit. This may only be his second game of D1 college basketball, but this is one he’s going to show up for.
Lastly, front court depth is a preseason concern for the Cavaliers. If their starters get in early foul trouble, they lack depth to cover for key players for extended stretches. Arkansas will attack the paint in this game and try to pick up fouls. This should be an area that the Razorbacks attack.
The Razorbacks got off to a slow start with last year’s team. Coach Calipari will want this Arkansas team to get off to a quicker start to the year, and this is a great opportunity for his younger team to build confidence early. The Razorbacks are catching a full possession, and that’s the side we’ll ride with.
Best Bet: Arkansas +3.5
North Dakota State at CSU-Bakersfield
Start Time: 6:00 PM EST
North Dakota State has been busy already this year. This is the fourth game the Bison are playing in the first week of the season. North Dakota State is 1-2 overall, but 0-2 ATS. The Bison beat up on Minnesota-Crookson in their season opener, and then hit the road. North Dakota State got wrecked by St. Mary’s and lost a cover by the hook to San Francisco.
CSUB is 0-1 overall and 0-1 ATS. The Roadrunners get destroyed by Stanford on the road in their season opener.
This is the final leg of North Dakota State’s West Coast swing, and they’ll want to end with a win. The Bison played at CSUB last year. North Dakota State won by 11 and covered as a 7.5-point favorite.
North Dakota State is expected to finish at or near the top of the Summit League again this year. The Bison only return one starter and a few rotation pieces from last year’s squad, but they’ve already played three games with their new portal team, and should roll against a new team with a first-year head coach playing their second game. This is one of the easiest handicaps on the board.
Best Bet: North Dakota State -1.5
Wichita State vs USC
Start Time: 11:00 PM EST
This game will be played at a neutral site in Stateline, NV. They’re calling this matchup the Lake Tahoe Classic.
Wichita State is 1-0 overall and 1-0 ATS. The Shockers won and covered as a heavy favorite against CSUN. USC is also 1-0 overall and 1-0 ATS. The Trojans won and covered as a very heavy favorite over Milwaukee.
We saw USC roll against low-majors and struggle against mid-majors last year in their non-conference schedule. The Trojans went to overtime against Troy and failed to cover against Boise State. USC returns a pair of starters from last year’s team, but added seven players through the transfer portal and a couple touted freshmen.
Wichita State also returns two starters from last year, but they will rely on a few rotation pieces to step into larger roles. The Shockers also added a lot of older, experienced players through the transfer portal that will also play roles in the Wichita State rotation. The Shockers have several key pieces that have been with the program for multiple years and added a lot of older, experienced DI basketball talent to round out the roster.
Wichita State isn’t back to what it was, but the Shockers are on their way. They’re experienced, deep, and tough. USC has a lot of new pieces getting to know each other, and the Trojans were a bit soft last year. They struggled with tougher teams, and we have a tough team catching 6.5 points on a neutral-site game. Let’s ride with the Shockers to keep this one close.
Best Bet: Wichita State +6.5
