MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 24
Miami Marlins vs. Chicago Cubs
First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – ESPN
The Marlins are first to the plate in this one. To say that they’ve been awful in the first inning would be an understatement. They rank 27th in first inning scoring – only ahead of the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Padres. They also haven’t put up a first inning run in the better part of a week. Matthew Boyd will be charged with keeping that going. He’s rocking an ERA that is just a whisper above 4.00 and is coming off of a solid outing. He tossed 5.0 innings with just two hits and one earned run against a much better hitting Reds squad last time out.
The Cubs are currently number one in the league in run scoring, which might scare people off of this play. However, they are 14th in first inning scoring and are now missing Alex Bregman at the top of the order. The Marlins will send out Tyler Phillips, who has been surprisingly effective in short outings. In the month of September, he’s posted a 2.60 ERA and has a pair of scoreless starts. He should be able to register a few quick outs for us on Thursday afternoon.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – FS1
The Reds have slipped on a banana peel with their offense late in the season. After being officially eliminated from playoff contention, they have dropped into the bottom third of the league in scoring and first inning scoring. That’s bad news for them and good news for Tyler Mahle (and NRFI bettors). Mahle has been one of the biggest trade deadline acquisitions for any team around. Since coming to the Braves, he has a 1.28 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He also has a 6.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which is twice as high as any point in his career.
While the Braves are getting a boost from their pitching, their hitting is still struggling. They’re in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. They’ve also put up just 20 total runs over their last five games (entering Wednesday). That comes out to 4.00 runs per game and would put them near the bottom of the league. While Brady Singer has been hammered in his last three starts, the Braves should just get themselves out here and cash this NRFI.
