MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 5
Athletics vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
We cashed on this NRFI on Tuesday and we’re doubling down for Wednesday’s action. The Athletics are first to the plate and they have been truly miserable at the plate as of late. They’re riding a six-game losing streak in which they’ve only scored 17 total runs. That comes out to 2.83 runs per game in that stretch. That’s music to the ears of Rhett Lowder, who toes the rubber in the top of the first. While his season statistics are not phenomenal, he has been sharp over his last two starts. In those starts, he’s allowed just six hits over 11.0 innings with a 3.27 ERA. The teams he faced were a lot hotter than this Athletics squad, so he should be able to get the job done here.
The Reds haven’t exactly been tearing the cover off of the ball this season either. They currently rank 23rd in the majors when it comes to scoring runs and JT Ginn kept them in check the first time through the order on Tuesday. Now we’ll look for Jacob Lopez to do the same. He’s another guy who doesn’t have the best looking season-long numbers, but he has come on with good stuff lately as well. Over his last four starts, he’s logged a 1.65 ERA and has fanned 10.47 per nine innings in that span. If he shows up with that kind of stuff here, the first inning should be a cake walk.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (+102)
Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The arms in our second selection are just as hot, but have the season numbers to back it up. Sonny Gray is first to the bump, and he’s been stellar for the Red Sox this year. His 13 wins have him second in the majors and he ranks in the top 15 in terms of ERA. Plus, he’s been excellent in the first inning. Over the last seven straight games, he hasn’t allowed a single first inning run. While the White Sox are a solid team at the plate, they aren’t going to get to Sonny Gray.
The Red Sox continued their hot hitting ways on Tuesday with six runs in the first inning. However, piecing up Davis Martin is a little easier than doing so against Sean Burke. Burke has been lights out over the last month. In five July starts (31.2 innings), he posted a 1.14 ERA and struck out 45 batters. Those numbers put him up into the top 15 of both of those statistical categories. Now he gets a Red Sox squad that is hot, but has struggled over the course of the year. He should help them to return back to Earth a bit on Wednesday.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (-120)
Bonus Pick: Angels/Orioles NRFI (-111)
