MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 24
New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Citizen Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – Apple TV
Earlier this season, we may have flinched looking at an NRFI with the Yankees in it. Now, it seems like one of the best values on the board. A lot of that is due to just how bad they’ve been hitting. In their six games since the All-Star break, they’ve scored just 18 runs (3.00 runs per game). Additionally, their recent bad run has them falling to the top ten in run scoring and run scoring in the first inning. Facing Jesus Luzardo won’t help matters for them. He’s rocking a 3.43 ERA on the year and ranks in the top five of the league in strikeouts.
The bottom of the first will see Cam Schlittler toe the rubber. He currently sits as the odds-on favorite to win the AL Cy Young award at +130 in most books. He carries a 2.20 ERA into action on Friday and has fanned 145 batters in 123.0 innings. Schlittler will get a little help from a Phillies team that isn’t tearing the cover off of the ball. They rank 18th in the league in run scoring and have also been worse since the mid-season break.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-125)
Cleveland Guardians vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
While both the Phillies and Yankees are on a skid, neither is putting up as bad of numbers as the Guardians. They’re scoring just 4.01 runs per game over the entire season, which puts them in 29th place overall. Only the Blue Jays have been worse at scoring runs this year. That’s music to the ears of Shane McClanahan and his 3.16 ERA. Maybe his strikeout stuff isn’t ideal, but I would take a pitching machine to get us out of the first against the Guardians.
Tampa Bay is nothing to write home about offensively either. They rank middle of the pack in run scoring. Additionally, they rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to first inning scoring. Trying to keep that trend going is Guardians lefty Joey Cantillo. He has been on fire lately, allowing more than two runs in just one of his last seven starts. He’s posted a 2.31 ERA in that stretch of the season, and that gives me plenty of faith that he can keep these Rays in check.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-120)
Bonus Pick: Reds/Cardinals NRFI (-115)
