Through the first two rounds, we’ve gotten a pretty good idea of how East Lake is playing and which parts of a golfer’s game can create opportunities. For Saturday, I’m turning my attention to two of the biggest names in the field.
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler haven’t necessarily gotten everything out of their games through 36 holes, but both have shown enough for me to believe there’s a ceiling round coming.
And moving day feels like the perfect time to buy it.

Rory McIlroy Top 10
Rory McIlroy did not have the greatest Round 2. Really, he hasn’t gotten much out of either of his first two rounds.
But there is something underneath those scores that I like.
Rory is absolutely firing at flags.
That aggression creates a volatile profile. When you’re constantly attacking pins, there are going to be mistakes. You’re going to short-side yourself occasionally, find some difficult spots and bring bogeys into play.
But it also creates an incredibly high ceiling.
That’s what I want to target Saturday.
Rory is a multiple-time FedExCup champion and finds himself in a position where there isn’t much reason to play conservatively. I expect him to go out this weekend looking to make something happen.
We aren’t looking for safe Rory here.
We’re looking for the version that attacks East Lake, gives himself a ton of scoring opportunities and potentially goes on one of those runs where the birdies start piling up.
That means embracing some risk with our Round 3 prop.

Scottie Scheffler Outright
One thing we simply do not do anymore:
Count Scottie Scheffler out.
Whether he’s recovering from sickness, coming off a slow round or literally in jail, we have seen this story enough times to know what can happen next.
Scottie makes his charge.
He knows his way around East Lake — and pretty much everywhere else — and there are already encouraging signs underneath his first two rounds.
Most importantly, the irons have been exceptional.
That immediately gets my attention heading into Saturday.
Scottie is by no means too far back to make some noise this weekend. With his ability to generate opportunities from tee to green, it doesn’t take much for an ordinary round to suddenly turn into a 5-, 6- or 7-under day.
The leaderboard might tell us Scottie has work to do.
His ball striking tells me the charge could be coming.
I’m betting Saturday is when it starts.
