MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 9
Atlanta Braves vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Some might look at this, see Bryce Elder on the bump and assume I’m losing my marbles. It’s fair – he hasn’t really been able to get anyone out lately. He’s given up 19 earned runs over his last three starts, which is clearly why the NRFI is at underdog odds for this one. However, he dealt with the Pirates last month well. He threw 6.0 innings in that game and only allowed two runs. Pittsburgh also looked clueless at the plate on Wednesday – managing just four hits and no runs against Grant Holmes and a slew of relievers.
To close out this one, this is a full fade of the Braves offense. Not only did the Braves not get a first inning run off of Jared Jones on Wednesday, but they didn’t get a baserunner until the 6th inning. That seems to be a trend with them lately. They’ve scored just ten total runs over their last three games and are on a major skid with Ronald Acuna out of the lineup. Mitch Keller has had an up and down season, but this is more about Atlanta than it is about him.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (+100)
Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
We whiffed on this game on Wednesday. Although just one run was scored in the first three innings, the NRFI did not cash. We’re getting right back on the horse and riding the starters for this one.
Nathan Eovaldi is first on the hill in this one. He’s been mowing batters down lately with 18 strikeouts in his last two starts combined. He also managed to hold those squads to just three total runs in 12.0 innings of work. With the Angels being a below average run scoring offense, Eovaldi shouldn’t run into any early trouble.
Reid Detmers gets the ball to round this one out. He carries a respectable 4.13 ERA into action on Thursday, but it’s the strikeouts that bring the faith for me. He has fanned 117 batters on the year, which has him ranked 13th in all of MLB. Texas has just 4.06 runs scored per game, which puts them at 26th in the majors. Detmers should get plenty of swing and miss to help this NRFI cash.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (-140)
