MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 3

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll kick off the NRFI plays with the Mets at the dish this whole season. They rank 28th in the majors in run scoring and are one of four teams that sit behind a 4.00 runs per game mark. They’ve been even worse lately too. They’ve scored just seven runs over their last three games (or 2.33 runs per game) and did not score a single first inning run in that stretch. They’ll face Grant Holmes on Friday, who will try to keep his run going as well. He’s allowed just one run over his last two appearances (8.2 innings) and fanned eight in that span. Just about anyone can get the Mets out now, Holmes should as well.

In the bottom of the first, we get a slumping Braves team who just can’t seem to get out of their own way. Despite putting up five runs in the first inning on Thursday, they closed the game with just five runs. The blanks in each of the last eight frames is indicative as to how bad their offense has been since the calendar turned to June. Facing Christian Scott likely won’t help matters. He holds a 3.20 ERA with 53 strikeouts in just 45.0 innings. He should be able to keep the Braves in check to start.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 3: No (+100)

Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Speaking of slumping offenses, the Red Sox get the first hacks in this one. Not only are they 29th in the majors in scoring with 3.96 runs per game, but they’re swinging below that average over the last three games (3.00 in that stretch). Reid Detmers will be charged with keeping that streak intact. He had himself a massive June where he put up a 2.27 ERA in five starts and kept his opponents to two or less runs in four of those. All of those offenses were more dangerous than this Red Sox team, which brings confidence to this NRFI.

To close it out, we’ll see the next start in the young career of Jake Bennett. Over his last three starts, Bennett has morphed into the pitcher the Red Sox hoped he would be. He has allowed just three earned runs in 17.2 innings (1.53 ERA). He’s also mowing batters down at a big clip – 17 in that span. He’ll get a great matchup here as no team is as cold with the bats as the Angels. They scored just five runs in a three-game set with the Mariners (1.67 runs per game). Bennett should breeze through the early portion of this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 3: No (-135)
