Daily World Cup Best Bets – July 3rd

Australia vs. Egypt

Kickoff – 2:00 pm EST
AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FOX

Australia has been really uninspiring in the attacking third over the last two games. They’ve failed to put anything in the net and really only looked dangerous in the final 10 or so minutes against the United States. Even before that, when they picked up their 2-0 win over Turkey, they had just 24% possession and were well behind in terms of chances. It’s just an offense that doesn’t seem to have an idea as to how to build.

Egypt, on the other hand, has a nose for the goal. Trézéguet, Zico and Mohamed Salah create an attacking team that doesn’t waste chances. I expect them to get on the board early and then force Australia to try to answer. As a result, look for a low scoring game with Egypt moving on.

Best Bets for Australia/Egypt: Egypt to Advance (-155) and Under 1.5 Goals (+145)

Argentina vs. Cape Verde

Kickoff – 6:00 pm EST
Hard Rock Stadium – Miami Gardens, Florida
Broadcast – FOX

Cape Verde has been the talk of the tournament this year. The tiny country of just half a million people managed three draws and finds themselves paired with the 2022 winner Argentina in the knockout stage. While they’ve definitely played above their means, it’s not entirely a fluke that they’re here. Their defensive play, along with their keeper Vozinha, has been stellar. They’ve been able to turn away plenty of formidable chances with courageous challenges and playing with no fear.

They’re going to need more than bravery to knock out Lionel Messi and gang, which is why I think this is just a little too much for everyone’s favorite underdogs. Still, look for that defense to keep things interesting.

Best Bets for Argentina/Cape Verde: Cape Verde +2.5 (-160) and Under 3.5 Goals (-195)

Colombia vs. Ghana

Kickoff – 9:30 pm EST
Arrowhead Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – FOX

Speaking of defenses, the nightcap is full of them. Colombia has conceded just one goal all tournament and it came on a flukey header from Uzbekistan forward Abbosbek Fayzullaev. After that, we saw back-to-back shutouts against the Congolese and the Portuguese squads. They’ve also outpossessed teams heavily with a 60% figure.

Ghana has not been as dominant with the ball, but they have been able to shut teams down when they need to. They’ve allowed just two goals all tournament – both in the final game to Croatia. Prior to that, they had shut down England and Panama, taking a win and a draw in the process.

While I do think Colombia is going to be the more aggressive team, this game reads like a 0-0 draw going into extra time. We may even see Ghana play tight enough to get us to another set of penalty kicks.

Best Bets for Colombia/Ghana:  Draw (+340) and Under 0.5 Goals (+850)
