MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 23
Houston Astros vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 4:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Astros are first to the plate in the afternoon game and they’ve run a touch cold. Despite being a slightly above average hitting team, they managed just 20 runs over their last five games going into Monday. That 4.00 runs per game would put them in 27th in the majors if held over the entire season. That’s good news for Shane Bieber who is going to be making his season debut. He was scheduled to pitch Monday, but a rain out pushed him back to this one. His stuff looks up to its usual levels in the minors, and if he can return to his form from last year, this first inning should be a cinch.
The bottom of the first has the Blue Jays swinging, who have been way below their expectations this year. They rank 24th in the majors with 4.10 runs per game. They are somehow worse in the first inning, where they rank 27th in the majors. A date with Peter Lambert shouldn’t help matters. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a start in a month. In that span, he has a 2.28 ERA and that should be enough to give us an empty first frame.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: No (TBD)
Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
In our second NRFI, the Guardians will get the first hacks. They’ve been brutal at the plate this year. They are currently one of just three teams under 4.00 runs per game and rank in the bottom third of first inning scoring as well. There aren’t many pitchers who I wouldn’t like to keep them scoreless across the first inning. Sean Burke is not an exception to the rule, as he’s been solid for the White Sox. He enters Tuesday’s action with a 3.89 ERA and has been a touch better than that over the last month. With 21 strikeouts in his last 15.2 innings, the trend is positive.
Speaking of hot, Parker Messick will get the ball for the Guardians. He’s near the top of just about everyone’s AL Rookie of the Year ballot. He’s rocking a 2.70 ERA on the year, and his 91 strikeouts has him in the top 20 of the majors. The White Sox are a league average hitting team, but struggled at the plate over the weekend. In a weekend series with the Tigers, they scored just eight total runs. Messick should be primed to keep them quiet for the first three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: No (TBD)
