Daily World Cup Best Bets – June 15th
Spain vs. Cape Verde
Kickoff – 12:00 pm EST
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – FOX
While Cape Verde getting to the World Cup is a wonderful story, the Cinderella story is about to hit midnight. There isn’t a more brutal way to get welcomed to the World Cup than an opening group game against the Spaniards. Spain might not be running teams off the field in friendlies leading up to the tournament, but you can tell by their possession that they’re locked in. Pedri is one of the very best players out there and it’s hard to imagine that this inexperienced Cape Verde defense is going to keep him off the stat sheet.
Although I do expect a one-sided affair, Cape Verde hasn’t exactly been pressing in recent games. As a result, there is a chance they will sit back and play for a moral victory. So even if this is one-sided, expect the goal total to stay a bit lower.
Best Bets for Spain/Cape Verde: Spain -2.5 (-160) and Under 3.5 Goals (+105)
Belgium vs. Egypt
Kickoff – 3:00 pm EST
Lumen Field – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – FOX
The group that Belgium has up front to create might be one of the very best in the tournament. Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku will lead a charge that is going to be tough for a lot of squads to stop. We’ve seen that as they hung five on Tunisia and the United States as they wrapped up their prep work for this Cup.
The defense of Egypt might give some Belgian-backers some pause, but the scoring just hasn’t been there for Egypt to be competitive in this one. They were shutout by Senegal, Nigeria, and Angola in the African Cup of Nations. Mohamed Salah’s return to the lineup could be a slight boost, but I still think the Belgians have too much fire power to keep up with.
Best Bets for Belgium/Egypt: Belgium -1.5 (+165) and Over 2.5 Goals (-105)
Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay
Kickoff – 6:00 pm EST
Hard Rock Stadium – Miami Gardens, Florida
Broadcast – FS1
Nothing about either of these offenses excites me at the moment. Saudi Arabia comes into this one having been held to one or less goals in seven of their last eight games. Serbia and Senegal both seemed to pass around on them at ease and limited them to very few chances. The lone offensive outburst came against a lackluster Puerto Rican squad and, even in that game, they were held scoreless for the first 45 minutes.
Uruguay has been similarly quiet on the offensive side. They have drawn three of their past four contests and have scored just twice in those. That includes a 5-1 trouncing from the Americans back in November. More recently, they took a 0-0 draw with Algeria in a game that included seven cards and just one shot on goal. Look for a similarly slow one on Monday.
Best Bets for Saudi Arabia/Uruguay: Draw (+330) and Under 0.5 Goals (+850)
Iran vs. New Zealand
Kickoff – 9:00 pm EST
SoFi Stadium – Inglewood, California
Broadcast – FS1
If you just take a peak at qualifying stats for teams, you might find yourself backing New Zealand. However, now that Australia qualifies with AFC, New Zealand has the easiest qualifying path of any country in the world. They solidified their spot in this World Cup with a 3-0 win over New Caledonia after topping Fiji 7-0 in the semifinals. However, when you see the struggles in the friendlies against teams that did not qualify, then you see how rough this might be for the Kiwis.
On the other side, Iran is likely not set for a deep run, but they have one thing going for them. That thing is that they can definitely score. Led by the attack of Olympiacos’ Mehdi Taremi, they can rack them up. He picked up a point in four straight Champions League contests for the Greek squad this past campaign.
Best Bets for Iran/New Zealand: Iran ML (-120) and Over 1.5 Goals (-220)
