MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 14

Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

Detroit is the first team to the plate in this NRFI and they have struggled at the plate this year. Their 4.10 runs per game puts them 23rd in MLB in terms of scoring. This series has also not been kind to them as they’ve managed to put up just three total runs in the first two games. That’s unlikely to get better with Gavin Williams on the bump. While his 3.32 ERA is respectable, it’s really his work in the last handful of starts that makes him a solid choice for an NRFI here. He’s thrown 25.1 innings over his last four starts with a 2.49 ERA. Add in that he’s fourth in the majors in strikeouts and he should cruise against this Tigers lineup.

Cleveland is one of the very few teams that rank lower than the Tigers at the dish. They’ve managed just 4.03 runs per game – putting them in 25th in the majors. They’re also in the bottom third of the majors in first inning scoring. Casey Mize won’t make it easy on them either. He returns to the Tigers rotation after a brief issue with his adductor. Through his first nine starts this year, he’s only allowed more than two earned runs in one of them. He’s come out the other side with a 2.27 ERA and should get us a quick three here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 14: No (TBD)

Houston Astros vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

This won’t be one of the games where we’re just fading the hitters up and down. The Astros actually have fairly solid numbers at the plate and have found their legs recently. However, we’re still willing to put our trust in Stephen Kolek. Despite not being a household name, he’s putting up some numbers that suggest that he should be. In his last five starts, he’s sporting a 1.95 ERA and has fanned 21 with just six walks.

To close out the NRFI, we’ll return to the weak hitting teams. The Royals are in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring and are 29th in scoring overall – only ahead of the Padres. They are one of just two teams that have not managed to crack the 4.00 runs per game mark on the season. Spencer Arrighetti and his 2.21 ERA is not really what a team like that would like to see. We’ve seen an uptick in his strikeout stuff recently as well, which should help him (and us) in this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 14: No (TBD)
