MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 12

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – Apple TV

Kicking off the NRFI plays for Friday will be the Atlanta Braves. While they have been one of the best hitting teams in the majors, they are currently hurting. Both Drake Baldwin and Ronald Acuna Jr. are absent from the top of their order with injuries and their production has wanned as a result. They’ve scored just nine runs over their last three games, which includes just one last time out. To top it all off, they weren’t particularly good in the first inning even with their top of the order in tact. They rank 14th in first inning runs on the year. A date with Nolan McLean shouldn’t help matters. He’s rocking a sub-4.00 ERA and has 82 strikeouts in just 72.1 innings.

The second half of the opening frame shouldn’t be much of a sweat either. After a rocky start to the season, Spencer Strider is starting to look a bit more like the pitcher the Braves need. He’s worked his ERA back down to 4.00 and has fanned 4 in 36.0 innings. Facing the Mets definitely shouldn’t hurt matters. They rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring and they’ve actually been worse throughout the game. Their 4.00 runs per game have them ranked 27th in the majors. Strider should be able to find three quick outs to cash this one for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 12: No (-125)

Houston Astros vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

For our second NRFI play, we’ll have Houston at the plate first. While they’ve been a middle of the road offense all year, they – like the Braves – have not been playing up to potential lately. They have just eight runs in their last four games combined and three of those games came against the atrocious Los Angeles Angels. They’ll face Luinder Avila on Friday, who may not be a household name. However, he has been good since moving to the rotation. In two starts, he has logged 10.0 innings and only allowed two earned runs. His hot start should help keep the Astros cool.

The bottom of the frist shouldn’t be much of a sweat either. The Royals have been dreadful at the plate this season. They rank 29th in the league in runs scored with just 3.90 and 25th in first inning scoring. If that’s not enough of a reason to fade their run scoring abilities, then tack on that they face Tatsuya Imai. Imai’s surface numbers may not look stellar, but he is white-hot at the moment. Over his last three starts, he’s logged 17.0 innings and allowed just four earned runs (a 2.12 ERA in that stretch). He’s fresh off of fanning eight Athletics in his last start and should be able to plow his way through the top of this Royals lineup.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 12: No (-105)
