MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 9

Texas Rangers vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

Texas steps into Wednesday’s action as one of the worst statistical offenses in the league. They are in the bottom of third of the league in home runs and rank 25th in runs per game. While they did throw up a 10-spot on Sunday, they had scored just six runs in the three games prior combined. Now they’ll have the ill fortune of facing Stephen Kolek. The big righty has been nasty for the Royals this season. In his last four starts, he’s compiled 27.1 innings and allowed just four earned runs (1.32 ERA). That includes a complete game shutout against Seattle two weeks ago.

While the Rangers are bad at hitting right now, they are nowhere near as bad as the Royals. They rank 24th in hitting home runs, 29th in run scoring, and are in the bottom third of the league in the first inning. None of those things spell early success for Tuesday and neither does facing Nathan Eovaldi. He’s fanned 74 batters in 74.2 innings this year and posted a 2.79 ERA in the month of May. Facing Kansas City should help him lower his numbers even further.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (TBD)

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re taking a bit of a dice roll in this one. The offense of the Astros has been near the top 10 in the league in run scoring. However, I’m going to put my trust in Walbert Urena, who has been really sharp for Los Angeles. He enters action with a 2.68 ERA and was even better in the month of May. He posted a 1.64 ERA in that month. Additionally, he had two relief outings against the Astros earlier this season without an earned run allowed. I’ll trust him to get three more outs for us here.

There won’t be much of a sweat with the offense in the bottom of the first. The Angels have struggled to score consistently and rank just below league average. They have scored two or less runs in three of their last five games and this one is shaping up to add to that. Kai-Wei Teng will do his best to make that a reality. He carries his 3.06 ERA into action on Tuesday and even has a scoreless outing against these same Angels earlier this year.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (TBD)
