MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 3
Kansas City Royals vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Royals come to the dish first in this one and they’ve really struggled at the plate this year. They rank 29th in the league in runs per game with just 3.83. Not only that, they also rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Now they’ll have the ill fate of facing Chase Burns. The fireballer has been white-hot this season. He enters action on Wednesday with a 1.96 ERA, which has him ranked in the top five of the league amongst qualified pitchers. He also has 72 strikeouts in just 64.1 innings. Plus, the last time he allowed more than two runs in a start was April 10th. It’s unlikely the Royals will upset that.
In the bottom of the first, we have a team who is doing much better with the bats. Although that’s true, the Reds aren’t much better than a league average team in most of the important offensive metrics. I’ll trust Stephen Kolek to be able to deal with a team of that caliber. Kolek has been on a nice run over his last three starts. In that span (21.1 innings), he has allowed just four total runs. That comes out to a 1.69 ERA in that span.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (TBD)
Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Rockies are another team that I’m not blown away by at the plate. Despite playing at elevation, they rank just 19th in the majors in run scoring. This will be an away game and one that takes place at a net neutral park in terms of Statcast Park Factors. To make matters harder on the struggling lineup, they get Walbert Urena. He has tossed 44.1 innings on the year and fanned 41 – all while putting up a 2.44 ERA. He should have no issue getting us a quick three on Wednesday.
To close out the NRFI, we’ll have to trust an arm that hasn’t been all that trustworthy. Michael Lorenzen enters Wednesday with a league leading seven losses and over a 7.00 ERA. Even worse, his May ERA came in at 8.87. Still, we’ll trust that the Angels can falter in just about any inning. They have the worst record in baseball and a below average hitting team. They should be able to get themselves out three times before getting a run here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (TBD)
