MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 2
Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Kicking off this NRFI play, we have Connelly Early on the bump. He’s been stellar for the Red Sox this year – posting a 2.95 ERA over 61.0 innings of work. Not only that, but he is coming off his best start of the year. He went 7.0 scoreless innings against the most potent offense in the majors, the Atlanta Braves. Now he’ll get a team that struggles in the first inning to score runs. The Orioles rank 26th in the majors with 0.40 first inning runs per game. Early should get us a quick three to get this one started right.
In the bottom of the first, we get a Red Sox lineup that has left a lot to be desired. They rank 29th in the league in first inning scoring, which is only ahead of the Padres. They’re slightly better across the entire game, where they rank 25th. However, their 3.98 runs per game makes them one of seven teams that come in under 4.00 runs per game. This is good news for Shane Baz, who has not been amazing this year. He has, however, settled in nicely over his last two starts. In those games, he’s allowed just two runs over 13.0 innings (a 1.38 ERA in that span).
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 2: No (-135)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
This is a game that features some particularly scary offenses, but we’re still riding with the NRFI. The Braves have scored 316 runs this season, which is more than any other team. Toronto has been a bit slower going – ranking in the bottom third of the league. However, when you look at the pop that they have, you can see why they’re to be feared. Nevertheless, we trust the arms that are on the bump Tuesday.
Bryce Elder will be the first of those names on the bump. He is rocking a 2.50 ERA this year and has been inducing loads of weak contact. He’s allowed two or less runs in four of his last six starts and he should be able to keep things calm early here. Kevin Gausman will be the second of those arms. He’s been putting up some solid strikeout numbers this year and has his ERA all the way down to 3.13. When you combine that with the fact that the Braves have not been nearly as good in the first inning, it shows that we could get an NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 2: No (-120)
