MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 1

Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off the NRFI plays for us on Monday will be the White Sox. They have been an above average offense on the year, but have not been particularly good in the first inning. During their five-game winning streak, they’ve only put up runs in the first inning twice and those numbers dropped them to 13th in the majors in that category. Don’t expect it to get easier for them with Joe Ryan on the bump. He enters Monday’s action with a 2.94 ERA on the season and with 70 strikeouts in just 64.1 innings. He threw 7.2 innings against these same White Sox last time out and only allowed two innings. He got through the order clean the first time in that game and I expect something similar this time.

The Twins also face a familiar face in this one. David Sandlin made his MLB debut against Minnesota last week and he looked right at home. Not only did he not give up a first inning run, but he gave up just one run over 6.0 innings. That run came on a solo home run and that was the only hit he allowed in the entire outing. Minnesota is in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring, so even if they were to get to him this time, it’s unlikely that it’d be early.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 1: No (-120)

New York Mets vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mets have woken up a bit offensively in the last couple weeks, but are still one of the worst lineups out there. They currently rank 23rd in the majors in terms of run scoring with 4.05 per game. That’s already not a great start and it gets worse when Emerson Hancock toes the rubber. He carries a 2.78 ERA into action on Monday. He’d been even better as of late too. In his last three starts (17.0 innings), he’s allowed just three runs, which comes out to a 1.59 ERA. I’ll take my chances with him even with the Mets gaining momentum.

In the bottom of the first, we have the Mariners getting their hacks. They have been a below average run scoring team all year and currently sit in 17th place in runs per game. Reliever Austin Warren is going to serve as an opener for the Mets here. While I usually like to stay away from openers, he’s been fantastic this year. He has allowed just a run in just one of his last ten appearances. His ERA for the month of May was 1.15 and he should be able to get us three quick outs here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 1: No (-120)
