MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 21

Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off the NRFI play here is Casey Mize on the bump. He carries a 2.43 ERA into action on Wednesday and has been even better as of late. Over his last four starts, he threw 21.0 innings and allowed just three earned runs. That comes out to a 1.29 ERA in that span. He’s also fresh off his best start of the year, where he held the Blue Jays scoreless for 6.0 innings. Now he’ll get the Guardians, who are just a middle of the pack offense. I like his chances to be able to get us a quick three outs.

The bottom of the first will have a pitcher that we’re definitely a bit less sure about. Joey Cantillo has the ball for the Guardians. While he is no Mize, he is sporting a 3.40 ERA and has been sharp lately. His last three outings have yielded a 2.81 ERA with just 12 hits in 16.0 innings. Although we may be less sure about him, the Tigers’ bats should help us in this one. They are one of six teams in the league that have yet to crack the 4.00 runs per game mark.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 21: No (TBD)

Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll kick off this NRFI with another lackluster offense. The Atheltics are one of the worst teams in the league in the first inning. They rank 23rd in first inning runs per game. While they’ve recently made their way up the leaderboard for the rest of the game, the first inning is all we care about. Additionally, they have the ill fortune of facing Jose Soriano, who is currently in the top 3 of odds to win the AL Cy Young. He has a 2.41 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 59.2 innings.

The Angels are also not a high powered offense. They are also one of the six teams in the league with less than 4.00 runs per game on the year. They’ve also struggled early in the game – ranking in the bottom third of first inning scoring. Luis Severino will try to keep them down in this one. He’s held opponents to two runs or less in four of his last five starts. He should be able to extend that streak on Thursday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 21: No (TBD)
