MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 19

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Field – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

If you’re looking at how low this NRFI is priced, you have to imagine it’s because of how hard Foster Griffin struggled last time out. He gave up nine earned runs in just 4.1 innings of work. However, if we look prior to that game, he had previously been three straight starts while allowing only one earned run. He threw 20.0 innings in that span for a 0.45 ERA. In fact, he was so good before that the catastophic start only raised his ERA to 3.53 on the year. Now he gets the Mets, who are in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring and overall scoring. That seems like a perfect spot to get him back to where he was.

On the other side, there is no getting right needed. Nolan McLean is a frontrunner for the NL Rookie of the Year at the moment. Most books have him listed in the +270 range and he’s looked every bit the part. He has a 2.92 ERA on the year and his 64 strikeouts have him 7th in all of MLB. The Nationals currently have the most runs scored in the league, but I do think that is a bit of a overperformance. McLean should help bring them back down to Earth in this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 19: No (-120)

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Our late selection is another great pitching matchup. Kicking this one off is Ben Brown, who has been straight dealing as of late. After putting up solid numbers in the Cubs bullpen, they moved him to a starting role. In his two starts this year, he’s gone 8.0 innings and has yet to give up a run. In those 8.0 innings, he has also struck out 10 batters. This includes a game with a top five offense in Atlanta. Getting to start at home for the first time should make these first three outs easy for him.

The bottom of the first sees Jacob Misiorowski back on the bump. He’s throwing up absurd numbers this year. In 51.0 innings of work, he has a leaue leading 80 strikeouts. He’s also sporting a 2.12 ERA on the year and hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 25th. While the Cubs have a solid offense this year, they have been terrible in the first. They rank 24th in first inning scoring and that should only get harder on Tuesday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 19: No (-140)
