MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 16
Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We head to the windy city to kick off our Saturday NRFI plays. The Southsiders play host to their crosstown rivals – the Cubs. On the bump first will be the impressive Davis Martin. The Texas Tech product has been shoving this year with a 1.62 ERA and 52 strikeouts in just 50.0 innings. He’ll get the Cubs at the perfect time too. Despite scoring 10 runs in their last game, they’ve put up just 15 in their last five for a 3.00 per game average. They also rank 26th in first inning scoring, which should help our purposes.
Closing out the NRFI is Martin’s squad at the plate. Although the White Sox have overperformed this year, they are still just a middle of the pack team in terms of their hitting. They’ll likely need a bit more if they’re going to get to Jameson Taillon. While his season-long stats might not wow the crowd, he has been good lately. In his last two starts, he’s posted a 2.45 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11.0 innings. Those are against a pair of teams comparable to the White Sox – which gives me the confidence I need here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 16: No (-130)
Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Red Sox get first ups in this one as they head to the new home of their old city-mates. Boston has been terrible with the bats this year. Their 3.70 runs per game has them ranked 28th in the league and makes them one of just four teams yet to crack 4.00. They’ll have to deal with the live arm of Bryce Elder, who is once again looking like an All-Star. He has a 1.81 ERA on the year and just a 1.01 WHIP. His strikeout numbers are back up and, against a team like this, they should soar.
The Braves are the top ranked offense in the league this year. While that’s scary for NRFI purposes, their first inning has been lagging behind their other averages. They rank 19th in the league with just 0.49 first inning runs per game. That’ll be tough to add to with Payton Tolle on the mound. He carries a 2.78 ERA into action on Saturday and has allowed just one earned run and seven hits over his last two starts combined (12.0 innings).
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 16: No (-140)
