MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 13

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

We cashed on this NRFI on Tuesday and we’re doubling down with this series on Wednesday.

A big part of the reason is because of just how bad the Mets offense has been. They are in the bottom third of the league in terms of their first inning scoring and are actually much worse across the entire game. They rank 29th in runs scored on the year and are just one of four teams that have yet to crack the 4.00 runs per game mark. Now they’ll face Framber Valdez, who has been solid this year. Although the Red Sox ripped him in his last start – which resulted in him getting ejected – he had put up four starts with two runs or fewer prior. Look for that version of Valdez to return against the Mets.

Another reason I like this NRFI spot is the young pitching of the Mets. As a team, they have the ability to keep finding dudes in their minor league system. One of those dudes is Chrtistian Scott, who will be making his fourth start for the club this year. In those starts, he’s gone 11.0 innings and fanned 15 in the process. Plus, he’s kept his ERA down to just 3.27. With Detroit being a middle of the pack offense, he should be able to get us three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 13: No (-140)

Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s always a dangerous move to look for an NRFI play with the best offense in baseball. The Braves are exactly that – scoring 5.55 runs per game this year. However, what is notable about the Braves is that they are not quick starters. Their 0.50 first inning runs per game has them ranked 19th in MLB. It’ll be even harder to get a quick start versus Shota Imanaga. He is carrying a 2.28 ERA on the year and has allowed just one run in his last 13.0 innings pitched. That lone run was a Sal Stewart solo homer. He should be able to keep the ball in the park here.

On the other side of things, we get rookie JR Ritchie on the bump. Apart from letting up a home run on the first pitch of his MLB career, he’s not allowed anything of significance in the first innings of any of his starts. Now he’ll get a chance to continue that against the Cubs, who have really struggled in the early parts of games. While they are a 10 team in scoring overall, their first inning numbers aren’t great. They rank 26th in first inning scoring and are likely to have trouble getting things started here as well.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 13: No (-135)
