MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 8
Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – Apple TV
Kicking off the NRFI is perhaps one of the most dominant pitchers in the AL thus far. Parker Messick continues to dazzle every time out for the Guardians. The lefty’s ERA sits at just 2.40 with 44 strikeouts in just 41.1 innings this year. Twice this season, he’s gone for nine strikeouts in a game. Helping matters will be the fact that Minnesota isn’t exactly tearing the cover off of the ball. They rank in the middle of the pack in all the major run scoring categories and should get blanked in the first easily here.
The bottom of the first has an arm that is equally as young, but with nowhere near the dominance. Connor Prielipp is just three starts into his career, but has yet to allow more than two runs in a start. He’s kept the first frame clean in each of the last two times out. Additionally, he is averaging 5.0 strikeouts per start. While I might not expect him to shut everyone down at this stage in his career, the Guardians rank in the bottom third of the league in run scoring.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 8: No (-150)
New York Yankees vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 7:04 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV
This is a risky one based on the offenses alone. The Yankees are only behind the Braves in turns of runs scored on the year. They are also second in terms of first inning scoring this year. The Brewers aren’t far behind them in either of the two categories. They rank 6th in both of them. Despite all those scary offensive numbers, we’re still going with the NRFI here. That’s because I love the two arms on the mound for this one.
The Yankees will send out Max Fried. He’s rocking a 2.39 ERA and has allowed just three runs in his last 19.1 innings. That kind of roll has to give you confidence in the NRFI regardless of what the bats look like. The same could be said of Jacob Misiorowski, who is mowing people down. Despite missing his last start, his 59 strikeouts has him firmly in 3rd place in the league in stikeouts. He’s also sporting a sub-3.00 ERA on the year (2.84 currently). He’s coming off 5.1 scoreless innings against the Nationals, which just happens to be the only team scoring more in the first inning than the Yankees.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 8: No (-140)
