MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 5

Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

We hit on this NRFI play on Monday and we’re going to double down on that action for Tuesday. A large part of that is how bad the Red Sox have been at the plate. Their 0.17 first inning runs per game puts them in dead last in the league. Additionally, they’re 26th in run scoring overall and have scored just 13 runs in their last five games. Facing Framber Valdez shouldn’t help matters. He’s been solid for the Tigers since signing. He has a 3.35 ERA on the year and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game in four straight starts.

Detroit brings us a bit more of a sweat when it comes to the NRFI game. They are middle of the pack when it comes to scoring and most offensive categories. The Red Sox are going to work with an opener for Tuesday in Jovani Moran. While that might give some people pause, he has looked phenomenal on the year. He has a 2.33 ERA and has fanned 17 batters in 19.1 innings. He’s never allowed more than one run in an outing this year, and I think he can get us a quick three outs for the play.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 5: No (TBD)

Atlanta Braves vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves kick off this NRFI play, which may make people a bit nervous. The Braves are, afterall, the best team in the majors at scoring runs. Despite that fact, they aren’t stellar in the first frame. In fact, their 0.54 first inning runs per game puts them in the bottom half of the league. George Kirby and his 3.00 ERA should make that much worse for them. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs per game in any of his last four starts. While we’ll need to sweat it out, Kirby should close things here.

In the bottom of the first, it should be far less sweaty. For one, Seattle is 25th in the majors in scoring with 4.09 runs per game. They are fresh off of a game against rookie, JR Ritchie, in which they looked out of sorts early. Now they’ll need to deal with the problem that is Bryce Elder. He seems to have returned to his All-Star form on the year. He’s sporting a 1.88 ERA, which has him ranked 6th amongst qualified pitchers. His stuff should be good enough to keep the Mariners quiet for the close of this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 5: No (TBD)
