MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 1

Cleveland Guardians vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll kick off our NRFI plays on the West coast with a showdown in Sacramento on Friday. Cleveland will get first ups and they’ve been struggling with the bats all year. They rank 27th in scoring and are one of just seven teams who have not cracked 4.00 runs per game on the year. That shouldn’t get any easier with JT Ginn on the bump for the Athletics. Ginn enters with a 3.24 ERA and has kept opponents scoreless in two of his four starts this year. While he’s not a big strikeout guy, the Guardians are a good team to enduce weak contact on.

In the bottom of the first, we get another set of bats that haven’t fired on all cylinders to start. Not only are the Athletics in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring, but they rank 25th in terms of first inning scoring. Those problems should be compounded by Joey Cantillo. Cantillo has not allowed more than three runs in any start this year and has a sub-3.00 ERA on the year. Not only that, but he’s mowing down batters this year. He has 34 strikeouts in just 30.1 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 1: No (-110)

Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – Apple TV

The final first pitch of the night is our site for the second NRFI play. The Royals head up North for a showdown with the Mariners. Their bats have been struggling mightily this year. They rank 23rd in the league in scoring and their 0.13 first inning runs per game rank dead last in the majors. Now they have the burden of facing Bryan Woo on Friday. Woo got hit around a bit by the Cardinals in his last start, but going into that one, he had been carrying a 2.08 ERA. Kansas City on the road should be the perfect opponent to return to that version of himself.

On the other side of the coin, Seattle isn’t lighting the world on fire with their bats either. They rank 21st in the majors in scoring and are just barely above the 4.00 mark. They, too, face tricky opposition with Cole Ragans on the bump. He similarly had one messy outing this year, but has otherwise been sharp. He retuned to form last game with 6.0 innings against the Angels. In that game, he fanned 11 batters and allowed only a solo home run. He should be able to blank Seattle and get us the NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 1: No (-155)
