MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 23
Chicago White Sox vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 3:40 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ
Broadcast – MLB TV
The White Sox come to the plate first in our first NRFI selection. While they have been hitting better lately, they still rank just 19th in run scoring this season. Making matters worse for them – and better for our NRFI play – is Michael Soroka. The Canadian righty has been a pleasant surprise for Arizona. Not only has he won all four of his starts in the early part of the season, he’s done so with a 2.78 ERA. He’s also racked up 28 strikeouts in just 22.2 innings, which includes striking out double figures twice. He should rack them up again here and cruise through the early part of the game.
Next to the plate in this one is Arizona, who have been an above average hitting team on the year. While they have been good with the bats, that skill hasn’t translated to the first inning. They rank 22nd in first inning runs with just 0.42 per game. They’ll also run into a tall task on Thursday. Davis Martin gets the ball for the Southsiders. He’s rocking a 2.16 ERA on the year. Although his strikeout stuff isn’t as impressive as Soroka’s, his 1.00 WHIP gives me all the confidence that he’ll cash this for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-115)
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ll use the nightcap for our second NRFI play on Thursday. The Pirates close out there series in Arlington on Thursday, and will have to do so against Jacob deGrom. The crafty veteran looks like his prime self this year. He fanned 25 guys in just 19.2 innings and put up a 2.29 ERA in the process. The Pirates have been surprisingly crafty at the plate this year, but I’d take deGrom in an NRFI against just about anyone at the moment.
Helping deGrom cash this NRFI play will be Bubba Chandler. The 23-year old flamethrower is rocking a 3.15 ERA this year, but more importantly his electric stuff allows him to pitch out of just about any jam. That fact should be compounded with the Rangers already ranking 29th in strikeouts this year. Not only that, but they’re also 24th in first inning scoring. Chandler should find us three quick outs and a NRFI hit.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-125)
