MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 19

Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Rangers come to the plate first and they’ve been one of those sets of bats you can’t really trust to score. In addition to being a below average offense this year, they rank 22nd in the league in first inning scoring (just 0.43 first inning runs per game). If those numbers aren’t discouraging enough for their offense, consider how tough Bryan Woo has been this year as well. He carries a 2.16 ERA into Sunday’s action and has only walked five guys over 25.0 innings – while adding 20 strikeouts as well. He should cruise right through the first inning.

On Saturday, the Mariners put up a seven-spot against the Rangers. While that might look like they have an offense that is firing on all cylinders, that brought them up to just nine runs over their last three games. That 3.00 runs per game in that span dropped them down to 3.86 per game over the year, which is good enough for 22nd in the majors. MacKenzie Gore should have no problem keeping that offense quiet again. He holds a 3.00 ERA over 21.0 innings with 30 strikeouts. Those big strikeout numbers should help him get out of any jams he might find himself in.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-165)

Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 4:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

If you look at the surface numbers for Garrett Crochet, you would likely be scared off this NRFI. However, all the damage to those numbers were done in his last start. Prior to that start, he was sporting a 3.11 ERA and had fanned 22 batters in just 17.2 innings. We’ll consider last outing a blip on the radar as he heads home to face a below average hitting Tigers squad.

Speaking of below average, the Red Sox have been in shambles this year. In 20 games, they have scored just four first inning runs all year. They rank in the bottom third of the league in just about every offensive category that matters. Framber Valdez should be up to the task of blanking them again. He, like Crochet, had an ugly start against the Twins, but has held three of four opponents to just one run or fewer. If you throw away the one bad start, he’d be looking at a 0.95 ERA this year. Look for him to return to that form against a struggling offense.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-155)
