MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 16

Washington Nationals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off our afternoon NRFI plays is Braxton Ashcraft, who will be dealing for the Pirates. He has been lights out for the surging Pittsburgh club, tossing 17.0 innings and picking up 20 strikeouts. He’s done that all while maintaining a 2.12 ERA and keeping every team he’s faced to two runs or fewer. Even against a Washington team that has been clicking during the early part of the season, I like his chances to get us three quick outs.

To close out the first one, we’ll get another team in Pittsburgh that has been above average lately. That, of course, means that I really like the pitcher toeing the rubber in the bottom half as well. It’ll be the little known Foster Griffin, who is coming off of having thrown 5.1 scoreless against Milwaukee last time out. That lowered his ERA down to a tiny 1.76. While he doesn’t quite have the swing and miss stuff that we see from Ashcraft, he is solid enough to get us out of any early trouble.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-130)

San Francisco Giants vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 12:40 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first in this one is when we see the good bats go away. The Giants are the worst hitting team in the league right now. Their 3.06 runs per game ranks 30th and they’re in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring as well. That’s music to the ears of Chase Burns, who is looking to right the ship after his worst outing of the year. His stuff is top notch and it’s racked up 18 strikeouts in just 16.1 innings this year. Against this San Francisco squad, that should be more than enough.

In the bottom of the first, we have another team that is struggling at the plate. The Reds rank 26th in run scoring – just half a run per game ahead of the last place Giants. Not only that, but they’ll also deal with someone who is racking up the strikeouts this year. In addition to his 3.24 ERA, Landen Roup has fanned 18 in just 16.2 innings. Those numbers should get us a clean first inning and a second NRFI of this afternoon.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-155)
